Completely knocked off my feet by this news. Barbara seemed such a rock in our list.
It's just so sad looking at all those pictures of Pepper (@RB) & Spice & Griffin James - what on earth must they be feeling now? We're all sad that Barbara's gone, but they must be so devastated & lost & bewildered.
ANN KESSLER:
I did not have the pleasure of knowing Barbara, but I send my condolences to her family and Airedale friends.
BOBBI PROCYK, SUNSHINE AIREDALERS OF FLORIDA:
I am so stunned about Barbara. Our love of Airedales made us good friends for many years.
MARILYN ROYLE, CRUSA (CAIRN RESCUE USA):
So very sorry to hear of Barbara's passing. She was a wonderful friend to CRUSA and a great dog mom.
PERLA CHIAFFITELLA, CRUSA (CAIRN RESCUE USA):
So sorry to hear and my prayers go out to her family.
MARE & NICK MOORE, in Canada:
I am just numb with shock! Soar high, soar free, my friend. I am sure Barbara is smiling & laughing right now whilst playing with & loving up not only her own beloved 'dale gone before, Pepper Rose, but also all those rescue 'dales she'd helped find homes for, and have since crossed o'er the RB before her.
GIANT Airehugs to you always, Barbara; the words 'thank you' were never enough for all you did for so many, including us with Black Betty!
DOREEN MUNDIE, CRUSA (CAIRN RESCUE USA):
I am sorry for your loss and for the dogs' loss. I wish her spirit a smooth journey; all the love she gave the animals made a difference in this sad old world!
MAUREEN SCOTT, AIRECANADA:
Barbara was a great friend to Airedale rescue. She will be missed enormously.
HEATHER PARKER, in Canada:
Barbara was a well-respected & admired person in the Airedale community. She will be sadly missed by many. Sincere condolences to her family whose hearts must be broken right now. My deepest condolences to her mother. Barbara's spirit will be found in the places & things she loved most while here on earth. In the quietness you will feel her if you listen. God Bless Her and may she be surrounded by Aireangels and showered with Airelicks.
SUE FORRESTER & BILL MOLYNEUX, AIRENET AUSTRALIA:
The news of Barbara's sudden death reached us here in Australia like a bombshell. I read the email in disbelief. For so many of us, whether met personally or through the internet, Barbara never failed to inspire and reach out to all who shared her passion with a personal touch that meant she
was your friend. Our deep sympathy to Barbara's own family, her mother especially, and to her beloved Airedales Spice & Griffin James. There must be great joy over the Bridge right now: "She's here!"
MARLA MARCUS:
I guess that God needed you to do some of your magic over the Rainbow Bridge. You are now reunited with Pepper Rose, whom you nurtured to her very last breath. She must have greeted you with with massive nose pokes & bright smiles. A huge hole has been left in many a heart on earth. You will be sorely missed, my dear friend. God Speed!
PAULA & JIM LACKNER, ATRA (AIREDALE RESCUE & ADOPTION):
In memory of a great rescue person, Barbara Durance.
SUSIE WIDMAR:
Many abandoned Airedales waiting at the Rainbow Bridge who had no special person they were waiting to greet will now be escorted by Barbara in honor of her many years of service to Airedale rescue.
JILL SPRINGBORN, ATRA (AIREDALE RESCUE & ADOPTION):
So sad, such a great loss.
SUSAN GORDON(?):
I am so sorry for the loss of such a devoted & kind person to the Airedales. The Airedale community has a loss. My sympathies go out to her family, friends, her Airedales who will miss her & all who knew her. I only spoke to her on the telephone and found her to be very caring & helpful. She wished me luck in my search for an Airedale and was saddened by my loss of my Heather, my first Airedale.
JAN WILLIAMS, ALASKA AIREDALE RESCUE:
Here is a photo of Pepper Rose in one of her favorite big deep holes. Barbara sent this to me in 2010 to make a tile for her.
It's so sad that Barbara is gone. Even though we never met in person, I always thought of her as a lovely person & a friend.
PAM & ART MALANCUK:
A dedicated ATRA volunteer who will be missed greatly by two- & four-legged friends & family.
LYDIA ROSS:
There are no words to describe my sadness over the loss of Barbara. She will live on in our hearts forever.
BECKY HAWKINS:
I never had the honor of knowing Barbara, but it is clear from the outpouring of emotion in the Airedale community that the world has lost a true angel. I can't think of a better way to honor her memory than to help more 'ales. My thoughts & prayers are with her family & friends. God Bless.
JOEY WARREN:
Barbara was a one in a million and it was a gift to know her and call her friend, even though we never met. She did so much good for so many people and so many dogs. Her life was joy and an example to us all.
RAINBOW BRIDGE
FOR RESCUERS
Unlike most days at Rainbow Bridge, this day dawned cold and gray,
damp as a swamp and as dismal as could be imagined.
All of the recent arrivals had no idea what to think,
as they had never experienced a day like this before.
But the animals who had been waiting for their beloved people
knew exactly what was going on and started to gather
at the pathway leading to The Bridge to watch.
It wasn't long before an elderly animal came into view,
head hung low and tail dragging. The other animals,
the ones who had been there for while,
knew what his story was right away,
for they had seen this happen far too often.
He approached slowly, obviously in great emotional pain,
but with no sign of injury or illness.
Unlike all of the other animals waiting at The Bridge,
this animal had not been restored to youth
and made healthy and vigorous again.
As he walked toward The Bridge,
he watched all of the other animals watching him.
He knew he was out of place here and the sooner
he could cross over, the happier he would be.
But, alas, as he approached The Bridge,
his way was barred by the appearance of an Angel who apologized,
but told him that he would not be able to pass.
Only those animals who were with their people could pass over Rainbow Bridge.
With no place else to turn to,
the elderly animal turned towards the fields before The Bridge
and saw a group of other animals like himself, also elderly and infirm.
They weren't playing, but rather simply lying on the green grass,
forlornly staring out at the pathway leading to The Bridge.
And so, he took his place among them,
watching the pathway and waiting.
One of the newest arrivals at The Bridge didn't understand
what he had just witnessed and asked one of the animals
that had been there for a while to explain it to him.
"You see, that poor animal was a rescue.
He was turned in to rescue just as you see him now,
an older animal with his fur graying and his eyes clouding.
He never made it out of rescue and passed on with
only the love of his rescuer to comfort him as he left his earthly existence.
Because he had no family to give his love to,
he has no one to escort him across The Bridge."
The first animal thought about this for a minute and then asked,
"So what will happen now?"
As he was about to receive his answer,
the clouds suddenly parted and the gloom lifted.
Approaching The Bridge could be seen a single person;
among the older animals,
a whole group was suddenly bathed in a golden light and
they were all young and healthy again,
just as they were in the prime of life.
"Watch, and see", said the second animal.
A second group of animals from those waiting came to the pathway
and bowed low as the person neared. At each bowed head,
the person offered a pat on the head or a scratch behind the ears.
The newly-restored animals fell into line and
followed her towards The Bridge.
They all crossed The Bridge together.
"What happened?"
"That was a rescuer.
The animals you saw bowing in respect were those who found
new homes because of her work.
They will cross when their new families arrive.
Those you saw restored were those who never found homes.
When rescuers arrive,
they are allowed to perform one final act of rescue.
They are allowed to escort those poor animals
they couldn't place on earth across The Rainbow Bridge."
