One of my neighbors has been beloved by each of our dogs
- and pretty much every dog in the neighborhood -
for as long as I've lived here.
She always has treats in her pockets
and is unable to say 'no' to pleading puppy eyes.
As she's gotten older, the boys & I
would stop over every month (now week) to visit.
She's unable to have the boys in her house anymore,
but still sends them treats when I visit.
She has an extra soft spot for seniors,
so she knit a Christmas gift that will keep DV's head
and neck warm on his walks. It is too cute
(and matches both of the coats we have).

Today we said goodbye to our sweet smiling boy.
DV's legs had been getting worse;
unable to stand up at all on his own,
and increasingly unable to remain standing once we got him up.
He was getting underwater treadmill therapy weekly;
acupuncture and laser/massage on alternating weeks,
but the impact of the therapies was lessening,
and they no longer were staving off the deterioration.
Since we had the big scare last summer,
each morning I would look into his eyes
and ask how he was feeling.
This morning he told me it was just too much,
and he was ready even if we weren't.
RAINBOW BRIDGE
Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here,
that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills
for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine
and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor;
those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing:
they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind.
They all run and play together,
but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.
His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver.
Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass,
faster and faster. You have been spotted,
and when you and your special friend finally meet,
you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face;
your hands again caress the beloved head,
and you look once more into those trusting eyes,
so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together . . .
