ELIZABETH & STAN
WALTERS

This is our Magnus CKC . . .

ADT

We had him from puppy hood, from a breeder in Jarvis, Ontario.
He was a lively guy and a real laugh, especially his countersurfing antics!
Picture a whole tray of ginger snap dough balls ready to go to the oven.
He was a terrific Airedale. I loved to take him on long walks.

His coat was made for him by Maureen Scott of AireCanada.

Stan always said, "Magnus, you make me laugh every day!"

Magnus died at 11-1/2.

I got involved with AireCanada and then ATRA through
Barb Durance (@RB in 2013),
and met with her often at the AireFests and did some home visits with her.

She brought us to Pal, our ATRA rescue who was also CKC.

ADT

He and his brother had been sorely neglected.
Barbara, Stan & I traveled on a three-hour journey
to pick him up (his name was River at that time).

His brother Mel went to a family in London, Ontario;
the two brothers met up again at an AireFest that Fran Ender organized.
They just acted like dogs! We loved Pal so much,
for who he was, and for his loyalty and gentleness.
He had a good recovery from bad teeth,
and being malnourished and underweight.

He died at 12 years; I miss him every day.
He got his name because as Stan was talking to him,
he said, "The Lord brought me a pal for my old age",
at which point, Pal gave him a big face kiss/lick and so he became Pal . . .
the dignified full name, "Paladin".

And we moved back to Ohio for retirement from Toronto.

Still active in ATRA,
I received a call from Kate Sitzman about a Welsh Terrier,
an old gentleman who had been surrendered to ATRA.
She asked if I would like to foster him, and of course, yes!

So I picked him up from her, and we both knew that if all went well,
we would adopt him, which we did and named him , . . Laddie.
He's a great old guy, now 13 and doing ok, despite some heart trouble.

ADT

So, that's my story and I know there will be a
"to be continued" in our life with terriers.

Thank you so much for the invitation to tell the story.
It was a pleasant walk back down memory lane!
(With a few teary moments.)

On 30 November 2022, Elizabeth writes:

Our dear old Welshman, Laddie, has gone to join his Airedale brothers in the good other world.
He was laid to rest on Saturday, 5 November. He was the dearest gentleman.

He came to us four years ago, as a rescue from ATRA.
Laddie was a handsome senior Welsh Terrier,
and a beloved family member.

He didn't play with toys, only liked dried liver treats,
and his greatest pleasure was going for a ride in the car.
I called him "my navigator"; we found errands to run every day, and,
toward the end, get a McDonald's cheeseburger to sprinkle on his dinner.

These are sad days without him, and I miss him greatly.
Here's how I remember him best . . .

ADT

I get teary, just thinking of him.
An ATRA friend said the kindest thing about Laddie:
"His joy was being with you."

Gr

BECKY HAWKINS:
I am so very sorry for your loss. Glad you found each other in his senior years.

Gr

LIBBY KARIER:
I';m so sorry to read this. Wishing you peace in your memories.

Gr

CHUCK RUSK:
I'm sorry for your loss.

Gr

ANDREA SHAFRAN:
I'm so sorry, Elizabeth. There's just never enough time. They leave too soon. I'm sure Laddie appreciated all the love, car rides, and liver treats that came his way in the four years he was with you.

Gr

MARE MOORE
in Canada:
Very sorry for your loss, Elizabeth. I am sending comforting cyberhugs your way. Bless you for giving Laddie a loving home in which to spend his senior years. Soar high, soar free, dear Laddie!

Gr

PAULA LACKNER:
I'm sorry to hear about your dear Laddie boy. He was a handsome boy. You are a kind and generous person to take in a senior as many people want the younger dogs. He will always be with you in your heart and memories, Elizabeth.

Gr

JACKIE IKE:
I am very sorry for the loss of sweet Laddie. He was a beautiful boy and was loved so much. He will live on in your heart.

RAINBOW BRIDGE

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here,
that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends.
so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food,.
water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor;.
those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,.
just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by..
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing:.
they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind.

They all run and play together . . .
but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance..
His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver..
Suddenly, he breaks from the group,.
flying over the green grass, faster and faster..
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet,.
you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again..
The happy kisses rain upon your face;.
your hands again caress the beloved head,.
and you look once more into those trusting eyes,.
so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together . . .

We have a new guy here! He is ATRA's 12-year-old Sam,
whom I adopted just over a week ago.
I met up with Jenna, the Indiana coordinator in Ft. Wayne,
and brought him to our home. He is our third ATRA dog.

I always change their names - new home, new name and,
in one case, probably a lot of unpleasantness associated with his old name.

Also . . . Sam and Stan (husband) are a bit too close in sound!
I think they both would be pointing fingers/paws at each other.

So, with a bit of research into names that might fit,
I decided on Aldwyn, "Wyn";
It's old English for "old friend."

Look at those ears!

ADT

He is my velcro dog right now.

ADT

He also came with a prescription of fluoxitine for anxiety that he has been on for years.
My vet said just to keep him on it, that it does no harm in the long run.

ADT

One little glitch was that Stan had a fall, nothing broken but injured.
He is now in the County Home for rehab.
Fingers crossed that he can recover ok.

That happened before I picked up Sam,
but after I had agreed and Jenna & I had fixed our transport date.
It's good that the home Stan is in welcomes dogs with up-to-date vaccinations.
I did that at our first vet appointment here,
and now he has gone into the home several times.
Wyn is much admired!

After our wonderful, dear Laddie died in November,
I thought I would take another Welsh or a Wire Fox (because of size, mostly)
and had applications in for them.
But then, I saw Sam. I do have a great fondness for the old gents,
and spoke to my ATRA friends, and now, here he is.

We are heading out for a walk. I found out how big and strong he is!
I bought two different types of harnesses,
and found one I like the best and it does help.

Much-loved Pal and dear Laddie were "strollers"
and indifferent to other dogs or squirrels.
