A good dog never dies
she always stays
she walks beside you
on crisp autumn days
when frost is on the fields
and winter's drawing near
her head is within our hand
in her old way.

. . . MAGGIE DeMerchant, who crossed The Rainbow Bridge on January 7, 2007. Sally Babcock writes:

I got a phone call from Shelley DeMerchant . . . Maggie had just died at home after about a week's illness and despite all of the vet's & Shelley's efforts.

Maggie was my Bella's Mother. Together with Doogie, whom she lost some months back, Maggie bore litters that are now giving immense pleasure & joy to a great many people.

If Shelley had a favorite, Maggie would be the one . . . she was such a light-hearted, laughing minx and pulled such extraordinary stunts. She was just so, so special.

Shelley trudged out in a snowstorm and dug the grave with several of her other Airedales watching quietly. She is buried near Rosie, Maggie's Mother.

. . . RUGBY, April 11, 1995-January 18, 2007. Ellana Livermore writes:

Rugby died in my arms at the vet this afternoon. He was struggling to breathe and had pale gums so we rushed to the vet. They got him stable long enough to do an ultrasound. He had a tumor and was bleeding internally. We removed the O2 and let him go.

He was my heart dog. He is why I do rescue.

Mary Giese writes:

Ellana was interested in a rescue when I steered her to Oklahoma & Rugby. He then wormed his way into her heart and got her into rescue, where she has made a great contribution ever since to helping needy Airedales find homes. I'm not sure Rugby was always thrilled to share his home with some of those needy dogs, but Ellana made it work and then found each dog a wonderful home of its own.

Rugby can be seen on the following page:

Dogs . . . do not ruin their sleep worrying about how to keep the objects they have, and to obtain the objects they have not. There is nothing of value they have to bequeath except their love and their faith.

. . . LANCE, May 3, 1998-January 2, 2007, dearly missed by Donna Engeldt & Michael Laubscher. Mary Giese writes:

Lance was a very sweet & handsome dog missed very much by his humans, Donna & Michael. Lance gets credit for encouraging me to take the plunge to the raw diet for my dogs. For that, they are forever grateful to him. With the same big hearts that held their love for Lance, Donna & Michael opened their home to needy dogs, including one very needy Airedale named Wills. Lance was always generous to Wills, sharing his chair, his toys & his humans. For that, I'll always be grateful to Lance and to Donna & Michael for taking Wills in when he really needed a break.

. . .WILLIAM (WILLS), who crossed The Rainbow Bridge on 22 April 2007 and is dearly missed by Donna Engeldt & Michael Laubscher. Mary Giese writes:

Wills did usually follow Lance. This time is no different.

. . .STEVIE, the Patriarch of The Barrett Pack.

On 29 May 2007, Dave writes:

It is with deep sorrow that we mark the passing of our beloved Stevie to The Rainbow Bridge today, May 29, 2007.

Stevie lived with us here on the farm for 13 years. This has all come on rather suddenly and there is an emptiness here that we will never quite fill. If there are any words that would describe this moment they might go like this . . .

If tears could build a stairway,
And memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to Heaven
And bring you home again.

Stevie was in charge of all the goings-on around here; he was never shy about warning potential trespassers, especially chickens, to keep their distance. He could always be counted on to race along the fence and bark at anything on the other side.

Many of you know that it is Stevie who appears on the home page of our website. He has handled that responsibility with great dignity & grace, never letting celebrity overtake his down-to-earth good sense.

Over the years we have heard from many wonderful people who found Stevie's pages on the web, took a look around, and were kind enough to drop notes to Stevie.

Although we are sad & tired, we think Stevie would prefer that we remember him as he was through the years. There are a few video clips of Stevie that can be viewed by clicking HERE. We hope that you will stop to look & to celebrate a few brief moments from Stevie's wonderful life.
