BRUCE GOES TO THE OPHTHALMOLOGIST
PART 2

8 MARCH 2017

Peggy writes:

We hope to get good news
about Brucie's eyes
so we can schedule his
cataract surgery!
Crossing fingers & paws
all goes well!

The next day, Peggy writes:

Well where do I begin?
The vet did the tear test
and it was improved
a little in one eye, left,
but the right eye was the same.
Inflammation is gone,
so decided to do the
Electroretinogram to check his retinas.
They are flat and non responsive.
He is blind,
so cataract surgery is not an option.
He will need to be on
the eye drops and ointment
for the rest of his life
for the dry eye and
to keep inflammation in check.
He also needs to have regular
check-ups with an ophthalmologist
every six months
to keep a watch on
the dry eye condition.

I have cried my eyes out with this news.
He is so sweet and loving and I know he wants to see so badly.
The doctor told me that I was doing a great job with Bruce,
since he can navigate the steps in and out of my house,
can run in the yard with ease, and has learned the words,
around and turn on command.

I told her that he will be going back to Illinois to a foster home,
which is an apartment.

She said, "But he is doing so well at your house,
with the fenced-in yard and he knows all his surroundings;
why couldn't he stay with you until a forever home is found
where someone could be home with him all day
and has a fenced yard that he can run around in?"

I told her it would be up to CRUSA and his foster person up north.

Wish I had better news, but guess it is what it is.
We tried and that's all we can do.

On 11 March, Peggy writes:

We have a handsome,
happy, adoptable boy here
who still has some superb
quality of life ahead of him.
Just hearing the news
made me sad for him.
Even the vet commented
how well he listened to me
and how happy he was.
They all fell in love with him;
he was only there for a couple of hours.

Bruce is going to stay with me as
he has done so well here
with my pack and is doing great
getting around here
with his blindness.

Shell Lewis writes:

Let's not mourn Bruce's condition!
Let's celebrate his future because it's going to be a bright one
(no pun intended).

Bill writes:

I'm still reeling from the news. Heartbroken.
Such an amazing guy. Sweet, smart, energetic.
He's with Peggy Nalley and doing wonderfully well.
Wishing him a loving new family and the second chance he deserves.

On the couch at Bill's house, Bruce contemplated his future

(On a side note: I sent all of BUDDY IN FLORIDA &
ROSIEVI THE SHY's eye meds to Peggy
to have her vet determine if any of it can be used for Bruce.)

Anim

DOREEN MUNDIE:
Sorry he has to deal with blindness, but unlike humans, I do not think they feel sorry for themselves . . . I think they adapt. He is beautiful!

Anim

ROBYN STINE:
Breaks my heart hearing about Brucie. I am always awed with the compassion these pups show for one another and for people. I know Brucie will be loved well with Peggy and hers.

Anim

ELAINE ALGER:
Such sad news, I was hoping the surgery would be done, but alas I guess that was not to be. Glad Peggy is keeping him there; he will find great comfort in familiar surroundings and though the world may be different to him, he sounds as if he has found his different world, dark as it may be, still exciting. Sending good thoughts for the little guy.

Honestly, I suspect that the other dogs know he is blind or at least different and though their support may not be noticeable, it is still there. Don't you think these dogs are wonderful?

I know that the older dogs can be a financial drain on the rescue's funds but the senior dogs and ones like this little guy just touch my heart.

Anim

BETSI GREENE:
How wonderful that he can stay with you!

Anim

JACKIE IKE:
It's so hard when we can't fix what is wrong with them. He is happy, lively and loved with you, Peggy. I hope you keep him. He is a beautiful dog!

Anim

BOB ANDERSON:
What a heart-tugging story . . .glad Bruce can stay where he is!

Anim

JACKIE McGUINNESS-PARKER
In England:
Poor Bruce, but I think he is not aware that he cannot see when he is in a routine and knows where to find his food and bed.

Anim

JEAN LAWSON
Sweet Li'l Bruce; sorry to hear surgery is not an option, hope he can stay in a safe environment.
