CHARLIE IN WISCONSIN

12 JANUARY 2014

On 23 January, Shell Lewis writes:

Charlie (estimated at one - two years old)
came into Animal Welfare League
in Chicago Ridge on Christmas Day.
He had been hit by a car, but the nature
of his injuries was unclear.
Tazwell County Animal Protective
Services (TAPS), a down state Illinois
shelter pulled him and brought him
down to their shelter. Their vet examined him,
confirmed that he had a pelvic fracture
and suggested "bed rest"
for about three weeks before reassessing.
Holly Crotty, shelter director and
former CRUSA foster home,
realized this little guy would recoup better
in a home setting and contacted CRUSA.
Gayle Kiesow picked him up Sunday,
12 January, and overnighted him;
I picked him up in Dwight on Monday.
A CPCRN (Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network)
volunteer assisted in getting him to
his Foster Mom, Katie Kneesel.

Katie took Charlie to the vet yesterday;
his situation is more serious than what we thought.

Katie reports:

Charlie has two breaks in his left leg.
There is one lower down in the leg,
which has started to calcify.
I forget the bone name,
but don't think that it is in the femur,
but rather the longer one
below the knee/hock.
The bigger issue that I can see
is the femur being broken where
the ball goes into his hip socket.
There doesn't appear to be
calcification there and you can
easily see that break on the x-ray
with even an untrained eye.

Then there is the right leg and the break has started to calcify there, too.
I believe that one is in the femur and above the knee.
They checked his back, too, since he appears so uncomfortable,
but I believe the vertebrae are fine. I think he is just
uncomfortable from trying to compensate on the worse leg
with the right leg also broken.

We have a couple of different orthopedic specialists looking at
the X-rays and will come up with a treatment plan soon.
Obviously, there will be significant costs associated with his treatment
so we need to raise some funds.
