14 JUNE 2008

Friday

On 19 June, Marsha Aarons writes:

McDuff (a/k/a Duffy) officially became a member of Steel Town on Saturday around midnight, when we picked him up at the Greater Pittsburgh International Airport, where Shell had sent him from Chicago.

[And no, this is NOT Jack Nicholson sans sunglasses, nor is it Pete Seeger . . . meet Jerry Aarons, Marsha's hubby.]

Duffy is one very frightened & confused little boy. He is seven years old and has spent his entire life in a puppy mill. He is the sweetest little boy and loves human contact, but isn't quite sure what to do when held. He is curious about our resident dogs and foster Bailey [who is going to her Forever Home in a few days], but doesn't try to engage them in any action. They seem to sense his need for space & time and are giving that to him.

I think it is fair to say that Duffy has much to learn about his new life in freedom. Today was the first day he seemed comfortable enough to take a walk outside of our yard and see what the world was all about. I am happy to say he was able to walk a block. He also took a rawhide from me and rolled onto his back for some belly rubs.

24 June:

McD is starting to come out of his shell a little. He is much happier when he is around our pack. Jerry took him to our dog park, which we never would have done this soon but I had an instinct it would help him. He shone. He loved the people and loved the other dogs. He is one sweet handsome boy.

Duffy is totally trusting and, sadly, totally submissive. It seems as though his Cairn spirit has been broken, but he is lucky and will hopefully have an opportunity to find & express that spirit. Duffy's eyes say a lot, as you can see from the pictures.

My thanks to CRUSA for making Friday 13th so lucky for a few dogs. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to foster this sweet & very handsome boy.
