Bear & Mopsy are the Labrador Canine Companions of Albert, who is the Owner and Administrator of TALK-ABOUT DOGS LIST. Both Bear, who is about eight years old, and Mopsy, who is almost four years old, were rescued Labs.
Albert is also an admirer of the Dutch illustrator, Rien Poortvliet, whose book, Dogs, is one that every dog-person should read. And Albert is a fellow Dutchman, albeit one living in the U.S.
In memory of Johny,
"How did Mopsy get his name?" you ask. Read this poem to find out:
Toen onze Mop een Mopsje was
Bear crossed the Rainbow Bridge on 26 April 1998. His memorial page is here.
I explained it to St. Peter,
On 30 April 1999, Albert writes:
Just to let you know that I have a new female dog since two weeks. Her name is Teddi Bear and I adopted her from the seeing eye. She is a golden retriever, 18 months old, and [she] flunked the test of game distraction. She chases squirrels, chipmunks, c.ts & small dogs.
She is also into rough play with Mopsy that I have to referee their games. She weighs only 52 pounds and is bred for the seeing eye. Teddi Bear can be seen here.
On 23 August 2003, Albert writes:
Some sad news.
This past Monday morning about 1 a.m., my beloved Lab Mopsy was under some stress. I comforted him with his head on my lap. I tried to assure him and to my great sadness he died within minutes without a sound.
An autopsy showed he had a tumor near spleen and heart and this one had burst, causing his death. Mopsy was from the outside healthy and strong, so his sudden departure is felt by us all and even Teddi my Golden is grieving.
Mopsy is cremated and I will get his ashes. He was 10 years old and had the same tumor as Bear who also died at about that age.
I am sure both dogs and all others who have passed on are waiting for me at the Rainbow Bridge. It is a big crowd of faithful souls waiting.

To pay tribute to all their friendship,
love and happiness we shared

was-t-ie aardig om te zien
Nu blaft hij alle dagen
en bijt nog bovendien
waf woef, waf woef, waf woef.
I'd rather stay here,
Outside the pearly gate.
I won't be a nuisance,
I won't even bark.
I'll be very patient and wait.
I'll be here chewing on a celestial bone,
No matter how long you may be.
I'd miss you so much, if I went in alone,
It wouldn't be Heaven for me.
