I LOVE this photo of Mary, don't you?? It was taken on 26 July 2007; Mary & Milt were going to a pre-Broadway play in Denver. The shawl came from Paris . . .

MARY & MILT'S NEW JOURNEY

In early August, Mary & I discussed the Cairn Terrier breed, and CRUSA (Cairn Rescue USA). Before she could get started with CRUSA, however, comes this note from Mary . . . 11 August 2007:

Well, guess what. I was reading the paper today and checking out our free rescue blurb in the "Pet Notes" of Saturday's Colorado Springs Gazette. I saw Scottie Rescue and I remembered meeting this gal at a parade. So I called and asked her if she knew the Cairn Rescue person. She did. She gave me the number. I called.

Her name is Mary Lou Wilde. She lives in Elizabeth. She has been doing Cairn rescue for years. A little stray was picked up near Brighton, Colorado and they called rescue. She says she has had him for three weeks and placed him and he lasted three days with the foster lady, who has a cat. He wanted to kill the cat, so he came back. She has not paid a lot of attention to him, because she didn't want him to bond to her.

He is 16 pounds; the age is a guess at two years old. White teeth. Not had any shots yet but has been neutered. He is a dark brindle. Elizabeth is about a couple hours from us and I offered to foster him. She said sure.

I think we will go get the little guy and see how he works out. She said he would have to come back to them if another home was found and we didn't want to adopt.

On 16 August, Mary writes:

Well we did it . . . two-year-old little stray; 19 pounds. Not sure I am ready for this but Milt is crazy about him. We picked him up to foster Sunday and decided Tuesday to keep him. His name is Duffy.

Milt had him out on a flexie and he whipped up the wood pile after a chippie! He is a little pistol but sweet as can be. Truly wants to please. We took him to the groomer today and know it was not the thing to do, but he is cooler and more comfortable. The breeder said to only strip him twice a year, but Duffy had a three-inch-long coat, was not clean and he is easier to sleep with now. He is in our bed at night.

I will probably never be over Dolly. She was my special girl. It is also hard for me to get used to a little guy. I have had big dogs all my life. But this is a new journey. I had three big Airedales here today and I know those days are over.

18 August:

Well, we had a busy day today. Duff met Airedale Lucy and all went well. He charged two little old ladies who approached the car at the grocery store, but I had a king-size hold on him. He is quite protective, but I am aware of that.

But . . . Milt had him out by the garage and Duff slipped or backed out of his new Premier collar buckle and took off after a chippie. Milt ran him down but he is as quick as lightening. That is probably why he ended up in rescue. I knew he would go after any varmint but I was inside and Milt was sure he was secure.

Milt took these pictures this morning. Duffy knew we were going to leave him and his ears were back. He is such a smart and good little boy.

I am still missing my Dolly girl a lot but this was the right thing to do. He is very easy to love.

Here are a couple of pictures of Duffy playing with Roofus Eiler.

Roofus is Leslie's Airedale Service Dog. He was with the Denver Police Department when he was about four months old, when he swallowed a rock and RMARC (Rocky Mountain Airedale Rescue C___) paid for the surgery. Then John Carr (@RB) fostered him after surgery, and heard about Leslie wanting an Airedale. She worked with a trainer in Fargo, North Dakota, then moved here last June. She is now a coordinator for ATRA (Airedale Terrier Rescue & Adoption).

He goes everywhere and sits under her legs when we go out to eat and does not move for two hours. When he has his service vest on he is a different dog. When it comes off, he is full of P & V. She has trained him to do things I never dreamed an Airedale could do. He actually winks at her on command, or when she says, "Watch me". He is a sweetheart and he & Duffy play TUCKBUTTRUN around the coffee table.

After all this running, Duffy takes a nap on Milt's lap . . .
