DAY FOUR - THE DIVES
UNDERWATER SCULPTURE GARDEN
| |
Moiinere Bay is now home to 65 sculptures, covering an area of 800 square metres. It is located two miles north of the capital St Georges on the west coast of the island, within an area designated a National Marine Park. The bay is enclosed by rock headlands and has a small beach in one corner. Within the Bay the sea ranges in depth from 0-25m.
Moliniere Bay suffered considerable storm damage in recent years and the placement of an artificial structure has provided a new base for marine life to proliferate. The sculptures were also designed to create a diversion from other areas of coral reef currently endangered by overuse from water activities.
Creator of the world's first underwater sculpture park, Jason de Caires Taylor has gained international recognition for his unique work. His sculptures highlight ecological processes whilst exploring the intricate relationships between modern art and the environment. By using sculptures to create artificial reefs, the artist's interventions promote hope and recovery, and underline our need to understand and protect the natural world.

The sculptures are sited in clear shallow waters to afford easy access by divers, snorkellers and those in glass-bottomed boats. Viewers are invited to discover the beauty of our underwater planet and to appreciate the processes of reef evolution.

[I am NOT a proponent of these artificial so-called reefs, but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do to get those tourist dollars. Neal stated that Grenada doesn't have mountains for Christo to wrap in fabric; Christo, however, makes his art installations temporary. These sculptures are permanent.]
