SPOTTED BAY

Suiting up . . .

Ph

Ph

Rock beauty (Holacanthus tricolor), is a species of marine angelfish of the family Pomacanthidae.

Ph

Other common names include corn sugar, coshubba, rock beasty, and yellow nanny.

Ph

Sand diver (Synodus intermedius) can be exceptionally difficult to spot.
I have watched an entire group of new divers pass within two feet of a Sand diver and fail to notice it.

Ph

Sand divers are a type of lizardfish, and like chameleons, they are masters of disguise.
A Sand diver can pale to almost white, or darken to mimic a colorful reef or sponge.

Ph

Spotted garden eel (Heteroconger hassi)

Ph

The majority of garden eels live in the Indo-Pacific,
but there are also species in warmer parts of the Atlantic Ocean
(including the Caribbean) and East Pacific.

Ph

These small eels live in burrows on the sea floor and get their name
from their practice of poking their heads from their burrows while
most of their bodies remain hidden. Since they tend to live in groups,
the many eel heads "growing" from the sea floor resemble plants in a garden.

Ph

They vary greatly in color depending on the exact species involved.
The largest species reaches about 47 inches in length,
but most species do not surpass 24 inches.
They live in abundant colonies of up to a few thousand,
on sandy burrows close to corals and reefs.
They point their mouths towards the underwater current to catch drifting zooplankton.
