Piripi the Rescue Galgo
Jeanne writes:
Piripi is a Galgo, a Spanish Greyhound used to hunt rabbits
by their owners, who are known as galgueros.
They aren't regarded as pets and are not afforded any creature comforts.
One can read about these marvelous dogs HERE,
and about a woman who moved from the UK to Spain for athletic training
and ended up founding a now internationally-known rescue organization,
Galgos del Sol, Murcia, Spain. There are other rescues;
Piripi came from Galgos en Familia in Malaga.
I'm 72 and have had Airedales since I was five years old,
but was swept off my feet four years ago when I met Galgos
at a Greyhound Meet and Greet. While many are flown here and rehomed
throughout the United States and Canada,
there are estimates as many as 80,000 are destroyed annually in Spain.
Since Greyhounds are so easily rehomed now,
adoption groups have expanded efforts to get Galgos out of Spain.
From Wikipedia:
The Galgo Español ('Spanish galgo') or Spanish Greyhound
is an ancient breed of dog, specifically a member of the sighthound family.
