LIZZIE GOES WEST

12 JANUARY 2009

Lizzie:

Upon setting off from Denver on a cold, snowy morning, the first excitement was wondering if we'd make the airport in time!

Denver: Snow on the Road

Fortunately the snow cleared and in fact it was a beautiful, sunny flight with magical views of the Rockies and I guess southern Cascades until we began our descent into Seattle. That was the last I saw of the sun for the next week . . . .

Lydia Ross was waiting for me at the luggage claim and then it was off to meet the really important people - Alice & Dave. Alice was the complete gracious hostess, showering me with affection . . . Dave was more the reserved Scottish gent, but he warmed up over the next couple of days.

Lydia:

We have spent the last few days in the company of Lizzie Hurtt, who is here visiting all the way from Oz via UK. It was grand to meet her and spend time getting to know her and show her a few Seattle sights.

In the usual Lydia fashion, my car went on the fritz an hour before Lizzie was to land at the aireport. Much switching around and getting things straight, but I was able to collect her on time.

The next day we were in business with a car again to do things. Thank goodness for loaner vehicles and nice neighbors. Lizzie:

I'd been primed by my nephew to see the Seattle Public Library with its unique book returns sorting and shelving system. It also happens to have a delightful store, a great reading room (well, two actually) and an arts program too . . . we managed to catch a bit of a concert (G&S, Kurt Weill etc.) given by the Seattle Ladies Singing Group (something like that) All great entertainment. Pikes Place Market, too . . . In fact too much to see in just three days.

The Seattle Central Library was on Lizzie's list of things to see (it is new and an architectural point of interest), It really was very interesting; we did the self-guided tour.

We also went to the Locks to see boats go
from salt to fresh water and vice versa.
