Katie really keeps us on our toes!
Yesterday, when I arrived home from the grocery store,
Jeff was working outside somewhere, so I carried the bags in myself,
being careful not to leave the garage door open so Katie could escape.
I ran out of room on the kitchen counter,
so I put a couple of bags on the floor in our mud room,
thinking that they would only be there a couple of minutes.
I was working quickly to put things away
and rather forgot about where the two dogs were.
About five minutes later,
I noticed a blur running by me with something in its mouth.
It was Katie; I assumed she had one of her many toys in her mouth,
maybe off to hide her 'baby' in a new safe spot.
But something told me to follow her.
The toy in her mouth was not a toy -
it was soft & brown & felt mushy.
Oh no, it can't be!
The ground sirloin I had just bought for burgers on the grill
for our Memorial Day cookout was now in Katie's mouth.
I took it out of her mouth and deposited it in the trash.
Then I went to the living room to see what other damage she had done.
All the food I bought to be grilled
was arranged neatly around the living room -
veggie burgers for Mommy, untouched.
turkey burgers for son Matt, untouched;
ground sirloin for everyone else -
ripped open with most of it in various places around the room,
and Frosty hiding behind the chair licking his chops,
telling me with his eyes, ". . .not my fault Mommy -
she made me do it".
Apparently Katie was going to hide what she couldn't eat.
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry,
but I did know that I could NEVER leave anything on the floor again.
After a few minutes,
I started laughing about our sweet girl and
how she loves to look in grocery bags to see what Mommy brought her.
She is a girl of good taste and resourceful means.
And oh, how we love her.
Ever consider what they must think of us?
I mean, here we come back from a grocery store with
the most amazing haul: chicken, pork, half a cow.
They must think we're the greatest hunters on earth!

ELIZABETH BUENNING:
We have had a couple of these instances with our Jazzie [who was rescued by CRUSA
in June, 2012; you can read his story HERE] My husband says we have to remember
that they are survivors! That means finding food wherever possible! Jazzie chewed up
a reusable grocery sack with nothing in it because it smelled like food (leftovers
had been brought home in it). But this made me laugh out loud!
