PETEY AT HOME

28 AUGUST 2009

I can't believe it has already been one week since we adopted Petey. Part of me feels like he has been here forever as part of our family, but in another way, the week has gone by so quickly!

July's

His tummy is much better and I guess things are starting to 'stick to his bones' a bit. He is gaining weight quickly - we weighed him this morning and he is up to 8 pounds 12 ounces. I couldn't believe it! I had to weigh him three times, just to triple check! He was 7 pounds 7 ounces last Saturday at the vet, so he's definitely gaining the weight he needed. His ribcage is already a lot less boney. And the crazy thing is, he's *barely* eating the recommended amount of food that he's supposed to have. He is pretty finicky about the prescription food - it probably tastes bland, plus he doesn't like the FortiFlora that I sprinkle onto it. But obviously it is working and that's what counts.

Housebreaking is slow but steady. On Tuesday, I started counting, just to track progress . . .Tuesday he had seven accidents in the house (eek!), four on Wednesday, and one yesterday. We make sure he is with one of us at all times, and we are taking him out every 45 minutes (we set a timer). He is doing well at night and his crate has been dry the last three days.

He is just the best little guy! He's amazingly well behaved for a pup, although he does have plenty of rascally puppy moments. He has taken to rearranging our area rugs and bathroom rugs - he likes to grab them and run around. He also likes to swipe the kitchen towel when it's hanging from the oven door. He does a very good 'swipe and run'! It's hard to be mad at him because it's so funny. Petey has become pretty obsessed with playing fetch, and especially likes to play first thing in the morning. If you try to ignore him, he just keeps following you around, dropping the ball at your feet over and over.

I am going to call the vet and set up his neuter for about two weeks from now. They said to wait until his tummy was better and he seems to be normal now as far as that goes, but I just want to make sure he doesn't have any setbacks and make sure he has normal stools for a few weeks before we do it.

We feel so blessed to have this little pup as part of our family. He is truly a joy. Petey makes us smile and laugh hundreds of times a day! Thanks again for everything you did for him, and for allowing us to make him our own. We are so grateful!
