On 23 June, Elizabeth Bush writes:
Kekoa has an apppointment to see an excellent vet here on the Big Island tomorrow to determine the amount of surgery needed and if he needs more antibiotics.
They can most likely accomplish the SX here, as they are the vets for Parker Ranch, the largest ranch in the US.
He was flown in from Kauai to our hobby kennel.
He is very sweet, very thin, and very injured; he also has serious neck wounds, and a front leg that is not usable.
It looks like he was abused by a boar hunter; this not uncommon here in Hawaii.
He is very affectionate and not shy, in spite of the terrible ordeal.
He is friendly with other dogs and has no bad habits, such as
inapproriate barking or whining.
He eats like a horse.
We are fostering him until he is well enough to travel.
The next day:
Kekoa is back now; wearing a splint. Bone was broken and poorly healed while he was an orphan.
No need to amputate.
Doc says a good ortho vet can rebreak (ouch) and reset so it is straight and usable. X-ray will travel with him.
He is on antibiotics and pain Rx. Doc couldn't believe he is so sweet, while in so much obvious trauma and physical pain.
The recommdation is to foster one week; feed him and then have him travel to his home, so he can get his leg reset without much more delay.
Other than the trauma and emaciation, he is great shape.
He has an appointment next Friday to get his ten-day health clearance to travel legally and have the splint refitted.

Elizabeth Bush & Connie Turner are currently working on getting him to Oregon. More on that as details unfold.
As of last night, this dear dog was happy and sweet and eating up a storm.
On Independence Day, Kekoa gets his independence, as Christine writes:
Connie is on the phone. Kekoa has arrived in Portland! Happy and sweet and glad to be out of the crate.
On 5 July, Connie writes:
Kekoa slept extremely well and was still asleep at 6:00 AM when Gordon [Turner] was doing his check-in. (He also did a check-in at 2:00 AM).
Kekoa is eating and I'm feeding twice a day to start with, and yogurt snacks. The vet had him on Cephalexin for three days and switched to Amoxicillin, so I started with Amoxicilin last night and there is drainage from the ear so started with Otomax. The ear and neck wound ARE wicked. Part of the ear was also severed at the time of neck wound.
The shelter records also show he was checked for heartworms on 15 June and started on Heartgard. He was also given his rabies shot.
