JACKIE McGUINNESS
IN HOSPITAL

4 JANUARY 2023

On 4 January evening, I received this in my inbox, from Jackie Mcg:

You may not hear too much from me for a couple of weeks.
Don't worry, I'm fine.

A big Labrador ran into my leg at dog training.
The impact threw me up in the air and I landed on my left side,
breaking my arm and leg just below the joints.
I have to have an op to put plates in. Was in huge amount of pain,
but had morphine, lidocaine, tonox, codeine, paracetamol,
so feeling a bit better.

I get moved to a bigger hospital with orthopedic surgeons tomorrow.

OMG! Prayers & healing thoughts!

The next day, Jackie writes:

They moved me today to the trauma ward in Peterborough.
Big new hospital. I have a room to myself and a TV,
not that I feel like watching it.
Still on codeine and paracetamol for pain. It dulls it but knee still burning.

The surgeon said
I'd broken my tibia
just at the knee joint
and then compressed it
when I landed on it.
Which is why it needs
plates and screws.

They now think my arm
will heal without a plate,
but 13 weeks in plaster.

Here is the brown lab
that hit me, with his owner;
that was him winning
2nd place for
Most Improved Dog In Class.
[Which award I hope
they take back - ad.]

I'm hoping
to be home in seven days,
but the doc said 10 days.

It was a silly accident that has all the medical staff laughing.

I was at the dog training class. We were practising various recalls.
All the dogs were lined up in a sit stay and we were to walk away
and the instructor would see how far we could go before the dogs followed us.

I walked up the field a fair bit, when Lily appeared in front of me, barking.
I half turned to look behind to see what she was barking at.
Just as I turned, I saw Devon charging up to me.
I don't know if he swerved to miss me or was turning
to go back to the owner, but in a nanosecond he had body-slammed me.

The impact threw me up in the air and I put my hand out to save myself.
I landed on my left side. The initial impact broke my leg;
landing on it compressed the fracture and broke my radius.
Both breaks manage to be just at the joint ends.
