THE JOURNEY BEGINS

11 JULY 2014

I've just dropped Hamish off at the breeder
with his meds and snacks for the week. It made me sad;
this time last year we had just booked our cruise and
we saw and paid the deposit for Hamish when he was nearly six weeks old.

When I get home at 4.00 p.m.,
I will get The Wild Bunch into the car and take them off to
their holiday accommodation, then get back to March in time
for my beautician appointment to get my eyelashes dyed.
I don't want panda eyes on holiday if I get dust in them while riding the range.

Then I have to pack my cases, move the ride-on mower into the big garage,
give the house the once round, set the alarms and head south.
This is the point where I always wish it was over and
I was back in my comfortable rut in the office or at home.
I'm sure I will be fine once I'm on the plane.
I can book in online any time after 4.00 p.m. today.

I should be in Denver at 6.00 p.m. on 12 July.
I intend to go to my hotel, freshen up, find me a bar and at 7.30 p.m.,
order two drinks - one for you, one for me.
I will of course drink both of them,
but I know you will be with me in spirit (no pun intended).
So what's your tipple or should I just ask, what's your favourite Margarita?

[I wrote back: On the rocks with José Cuervo tequila
and a salted rim.]

I've put it on my phone so when I get to the pub,
I can tell the man exactly what I want.
Smartphones are great, I take a pic of things I need to remember
or send myself emails as reminders.

Well, first leg of the trip completed. I had a really nice drive down;
two hours and it was nice to drive my car farther than 25 miles
and nice to sit at 70mph for about 60 miles.

I'm booked in and . . .

. . . sitting down to a gin & tonic

and fish & chips for dinner.

Ahhh, that is refreshing.

It was a bittersweet journey just packing a case for one and no co-driver.
Last June we drove past here on our way to Cornwall and
would have come by here in October for our cruise.

I miss the dogs already;
Mr Mac was howling when I left him at the kennel.
Good thing I had my eyelashes dyed so at least
my mascara can't run and give me panda eyes.

I'm like a swan: calm on the surface, paddling like mad to stay afloat.

Here's my Thistle Hotel room . . .

McGUINNESS McGUINNESS

It's a chain of hotels that used to be owned by Scottish and Newcastle breweries.
I used to work for the brewers;
I was in charge of tenanted pubs on the west coast of Scotland.

The metamorphosis has begun . . .
