Country Western Night in the restaurant.
I'm choosing what culinary delight will pass
from my lips to my hips.
I was amazed at how much food people consumed. In the buffet bar from 7.00 a.m. you could get full English fried breakfast, full continental breakfast, cereals, muffins, croissants, fruit from every corner of the world, pancakes and waffles. This feast finished at 11.00 a.m.
You could then join the queue forming for lunch; some people like to queue to get in early and get a seat by the window: one minute ,there would be this dottery little old lady; the next, walking sticks flailing as she pushed by: ''Out of my way! That's my seat by the window!"
Lunch was again full British or Mid Eastern: Thai, Chinese, Indian, Morrocan, salads, cold cuts and a theme depending on the country. Pasta or pizza, then a huge assortment of cheesecakes, apple pies, hot puddings, cold puddings, fruit salad.
This gourmet feast finished at 2.30 p.m. and high tea started at 3.00 p.m.: fish finger and chips, salmon cakes, salads, sandwiches, wraps, toasted teacakes, hot scones with jam and cream, fancy iced cakes, cream cakes, ice cream and jelly.
By 4.30 p.m., the tables were cleaned and set for informal dinner at 6.30 p.m.; you could choose to eat in the formal dining room or here, or both if you felt really hungry.
