The following day saw us anchor just off Santa Margherita in Italy. It was lovely - built on cliffs and no modern highrise buildings to be seen; old churches dominated the skyline.
This was the best town we visited
We had to go ashore by tender; we had priority boarding cards so instead off getting a ticket and waiting till our number was called, we just had to join the queue when the next tender came along side. We joined the end of the queue, showed the crew member our ticket. "Come with me, sir, madam," he said, and took us from the end of the queue past everyone to the front and helped us on board.
I felt very posh and privileged; also convinced that I would get lynched for skipping the queue (it's a British thing), but the laugh was that we then had to sit bobbing about while the rest of the queue boarded; not so special now!
Santa Margherita town square
We wandered up and down the little alleyways, in and out of musty old churches and eventually decided to have a coffee. I sat down, looked at the menu; I've never learnt Italian, so I suggested to Tom that I could try German instead. He wasn't amused, and the waiter understood, "Two coffees, please."
Typical of Italian towns - lots of beautiful churches
