DAY FIVE

5 JUNE 2010

The sun was shining but the wind was freezing, so only the hardy were walking round the deck. That's what people did . . . the hardy went running round & round the deck; three circuits equals one mile. Some even went for a swim in the outdoor pool.

I chose to exercise indoors: Down one level, walk to the bow, down a level, walk back and so on until I reached Deck Two, then the same back up to Deck Seven for breakfast.

I breakfasted like a king - fruit juice, fruit compote (figs, prunes, red grapefruit), eggs boiled, Benedict, scrambled, sunny side up, over easy (I never knew there were so ways to serve eggs). They all came with pancakes, bacon and maple syrup; I can't get my head round syrup with bacon and egg.

One day I had filet mignon. Well, I asked for that because it was on the menu. I got two huge pieces of sirloin and a fried egg; it would have done my lunch & dinner as well. I ate most of it because I was brought up that if you ask for it, you eat it and I hate waste; also I didn't think it would keep for the Wild Bunch till I got home.

Did I mention there were dogs on board, traveling back home with their American owners? Some of them were from UK shelters which was really nice, but a bit like importing coals to Newcastle.

Check out the coat on the Westie

I jest, of course; the owners had been living in the UK
and chosen a pet from one of our starfish pools,
given it a wonderful life and a much kinder journey
back to the States than flying.

My Dog Fix

Was this the classical pianist tonight, . . .

. . . or was this a Welsh Placido Domingo look-alike?
