Yesterday, I drove to a small farming community in downstate Illinois to pick up a 12-year-old Cairn bitch named Bonnie from a breeder. The breeder had actually owned Bonnie and bred her as a young dog and when her puppy-producing days were over, she sold her to an elderly woman in town.
Fast forward seven years and Bonnie's owner is now senile and her house has been condemned by the county (it was filthy and her animals were not taken care of). The woman has been put in a nursing home and the breeder agreed to take Bonnie back and she subsequently called us.
Given Bonnie's age, I never really expected her to get adopted but I had a foster home lined up for her and figured she'd spend the rest of her days there. I couldn't have been more wrong.
Captain's "owners to be" had asked me for some literature on Cairns and I happened to have it in my car yesterday. Since they were not too far off my route, I called them and asked if I could stop by and they agreed.
As our visit was wrapping up and I was walking back to my car, I told them about Bonnie (who was crated in the back) and they asked if they could see her.
They thought she was adorable (she is!) and by the time I got home, there was an email asking if they could also adopt her as a "special pal" for Cappy! I couldn't be more thrilled! Within a five-hour timeframe, we brought a senior dog into our program AND adopted her out! Suffice it to say, I had a VERY good day yesterday.
