PUMPKIN [SPICE]
CRACKER BREAD
22 NOVEMBER 2024

I was looking to bake something autumn-ish, that I could mix whilst sitting down;
I found this recipe from 1975 on a YouTube video of B. Dylan Hollis.

PUMPKIN

So I added graham crackers and canned frosting to Neal's shopping list.
I am using the canned frosting because 1) it is a BOGO this week;
and 2) a vanilla frosting take an inordinate amount of powdered sugar.
(I also recommend buying angel food cake mix
rather than making one from scratch,
due to the amount of egg whites required).

Altho the original recipe is for plain bread,
I decided to add pumpkin pie spices (of course I did) . . .

PUMPKIN

. . . which worked out well 'cause Neal bought a box of regular
and one of cinnamon graham crackers, so I didn't need to add cinnamon . . .

PUMPKIN

Adding dry ingredients to wet . . .

PUMPKIN

. . . you can see why the recipe calls for a LARGE bowl.

This seemed awfully dry to me . . .

PUMPKIN

. . . but I plopped it into the greased loaf pan anyway . . .

PUMPKIN

. . . and patted it down.

Meanwhile, watching the back door,
awaiting Neal's return from the library . . .

SWEETEA

SweeTea looks a little "out of it" 'cause she had a dental yesterday,
with four extractions.

Well, obviously something is wrong . . .

PUMPKIN

. . . as the bread hadn't risen at all, and looks NOTHING like either
Dylan's video or the first pic above!

Welp, lesson learned . . .

PUMPKIN

. . . check and replace your baking powder regularly.

Neal had suggested using lots of frosting,
but I don't think even THAT would make this palatable.

At this point, I went into the kitchen, intending to dispose of my failure.
The slice was missing. I asked Neal if he'd eaten it
(unless the Skrenninger Trio suddenly learned
how to stand on each other to countersurf,
of course it was Neal who ate it); he declared that "it was pretty good,
but it could use some frosting." So I obliged.

I tried a bite and wouldn't eat more of it, but chacun à son goût.
