JUSTICE FOR HUEY
. . . EVENTUALLY . . .

13 JULY 2008

________ writes:

The police were at Deb's house again a few days ago. I think it was something to do with her teenage daughter, but don't really know. Even if Odie hadn't been mutilated, it's good that he's not in all that turmoil any more.

I still remember him standing on the couch looking at me and trying to get to me, feebly wagging his tail, when I went to the house and took him away from her. And that horrible stench - how did they stand that odor in the house for a week? Probably the only reason she called me was because they couldn't stand the smell any longer . . . .

On 28 July, Holly writes:

Huey is such a happy little dog and loves everyone he meets. He & KoKo especially love each other and can often be found sleeping curled up with one another. I never have the camera when I need it, but I was able to get this one of them sleeping together on the floor while I was typing on the computer. He has really done wonders for KoKo.

Odie

I'll let you know what I hear after her next court date . . .
keep your fingers crossed for a guilty verdict!

On 5 August, Holly writes:

I was e-mailing with ______ today and I asked her if Debra ever mentioned where she got Huey to see if we'd ever know what breed he is or his age.

_____ (the one who rescued him) said that Deb (his former owner) took Huey from her (Deb) daughter's house because she was being so mean to him and she couldn't stand to see the way he was being treated . . . this coming from the lady who tied him up outside without food or water, had a too tight choke collar on him, and let gangrene set in on his little body. Seriously, if that is better treatment, I don't want to think about what he went through before he made his way into her home.

On 14 August, Holly writes:

Huey's owner (Deb) goes back to court on Friday and I'm hopeful I'll be able to register [for MIDWEST CAIRNFEST 2008] and make an additional donation in honor of a guilty verdict. She was charged in March; I cannot imagine that it would get continued again, and I sure hope with the photos, report, etc, it isn't not guilty.

On 7 September, Huey joined 80 other dogs (mostly Cairns, of course) and almost 100 people at MIDWEST CAIRNFEST 2008, which can be seen HERE.

On 12 September, Holly writes: Justice for Huey!

The case against Huey's owner has FINALLY come to an end. After insisting on a jury trial today, she finally changed her mind and pleaded guilty. She pleaded guilty to a Class B misdemeanor for failure of owner's duties to obtain vet care to prevent pain and suffering (in Illinois, it isn't illegal to actually try to neuter him, as sad as that is).

She will be required to pay a $250 fine, serve 28 days in jail with day-for-day good time behavior, so AT MOST will serve 14 days; they have already re-homed her cats and animal control is looking for a new home for her geese. She is not allowed to own animals for a time frame of one year and will consent to regular checks of her home by animal control.

Huey is so special to us. I would like to thank everyone for their support, donations to nurse him back to health, and help to bring him into rescue. I hope this sets an example for everyone else in that community that animal abuse is not tolerated.

Another happy ending, thanks to CRUSA and its dedicated members!

Odie

Please say a little prayer for Sasha3Legs. We had to take him to the vet on Sunday night with a tear in his only front paw. The vet says it will grow out, but I'm a little worried and I know the dressing is uncomfortable for him. He is so good, too. He just gets on with life as enthusiastically as usual. I just made a donation to Huey's fund as a thank-you to all you wonderful people at CRUSA. You are the best!!
