Oliver had the first injection to treat his heartworm disease a month ago.
As often happens with this toxic treatment (which kills and breaks up
the worms so that they can be expelled through the bloodsteam),
he had some negative reactions. Initially, he refused food and
had some very loose stools. The following week,
his breathing was labored so we got him to the vet.
His heart rate was elevated;
he was put on Lasix and another drug which helped a lot.

The initial plan was to treat Oiver with another shot this week.
However, in reviewing his treatment options with Dr. Ammon.
it was decided that it was too risky to do the treatment again.
He would likely suffer the same symptoms OR worse.

So we're moving to Plan B
which should have the same
positive outcome
(no more heartworms),
but take longer and delay adoption.
He will be on Doxycycline for 30 days,
then off the 30 days,
then on for 30 days, etc.
We'll do this for about
four or five months.

The surgery to remove his eye will need to be delayed
until AFTER the heartworm treatment has been completed.

Oliver is moving in with Sue Stoughton for two weeks
and then to Katie Kneesel in Wisconsin
until his eye removal in the spring and then I'll move him back down here.

NEAL SKRENES:
WOW - that's a lengthy treatment schedule for heartworm - good that there is a Plan B though.
