MAX GOES HOME!

27 JUNE 2011

Ph

Marti writes:

When we took Max in to our rescue program in February of 2011,
we were worried that - even once he was healthy -
we would have difficulty finding a home for him.
Being a big, black, male dog essentially meant he had three strikes against him,
since the majority of adopters seem to be looking for a smaller-sized dog and,
more often than not, a female that is any color except black!

Ph

But . . . in early June, Lady Luck smiled on our little rescue - and on Max!
A wonderful couple (Mike & Patti) saw Max on Petfinder,
and - after reading his story on the ALLDOGS.COM website -
they knew they had found the perfect dog for themselves -
and for Patti's special needs brother, Brian!

Ph

Of course, our rescue went over their adoption application
with a fine tooth comb (and checked their references);
the only stumbling block was that Mike & Patti
didn't have a fenced yard, which we felt Max really needed.
They wanted so badly to adopt Max, though, that Mike
immediately got to work installing a very secure privacy fence
surrounding their huge back yard -
which told us that they were sincere in their desire to adopt Max
and were committed to keeping him safe & well-exercised.

So, in late June, Max went to his new home
with Mike, Patti & Brian.

Ph

Since they adopted him,
Mike & Patti have kept in close touch and -
based on their updates & pictures -
things are going beautifully!

Here are some excerpts from one of their early e-mails:

Max is GREAT!

He has accepted his new home & family amazingly fast.
By the end of that first day,
he had pretty well familiarized himself with the house & our routine.
We gave him lots of love & attention to help him with any separation anxiety.
He is so easy going!

Max is good with our three cats.
He is interested,
but not aggressive with them.
Max's good nature will allow them
to accept him into the pack.

Ph

Max acts as if he has been here weeks or months, not just a few days.
He follows me around, but is never demanding.
He is so well-mannered.
I always make a point of acknowledging his presence,
making him feel loved & welcomed.

Max enjoys playing on the bed with us,
but prefers sleeping on the carpeted floor next to the bed.

Ph

Max loves to play.
He most likes to play with Patti & me like we are other dogs.
He likes to wrestle with us, but he is NEVER too rough.
He has a good sense of appropriate behavior and never pushes beyond it.
We bought him several toys that keep him busy
when we are not playing with him.

He loves going for walks around the property.
I take him for walks around the perimeter of our open field.
So far, the only time Max was left home alone was
for the brief time that Patti, Brian & I went to church.
Otherwise, he is our constant companion -
an arrangement that suits both Max & us just fine.

We feel that Max is the perfect companion.
I am amazed at how well and how fast he has settled
into being a member of the family!

And . . . he has taken to 'helping' me pick blueberries
by finding just the nicely ripe ones and nibbling them off the bushes!
So cute! They are good for him, so no problem.

He is very good about letting us know when he wants to go out.
It also helps that he is next to me nearly every minute of the day.
He IS a good boy!
He has done a little chewing, but not much,
as he has bones scattered around the house to keep him busy.

Ph

Max is currently hosting a visit from our neighbor's dog, Bailey.
She will be here for about ten days.
They are having a blast playing & chewing rawhides together.

I particularly like this photo if Max resting his head on Bailey's paw . . .

Ph

In a later e-mail, Patti writes . . .

Wow, just revisiting that older website page again makes me so happy for him.
If you had not found him, I can't imagine a full & wonderful life for him.

He is a dear boy and we love him so!

Ph

He is playful and loving and is like one big lap dog.
Wish I had a video camera, 'cause while playing with him one day,
discovered that he can jump REALLY HIGH!

We got him a frisbee and he can almost catch it.
But also, he likes to play "bullfight".
I bring out a large old towel and when I shake it at him,
he runs full speed and as I fling the towel up and over,
he jumps high in the air and passes by!
Then we do it again! Lots of fun!

BAGGAGE

Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed,
All nicely tucked in my warm new bed.
I'd like to open my baggage
Lest I forget,
There is so much to carry -
So much to regret.

Hmm . . . Yes there it is, right on the top -
Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss,
And there by my leash hide Fear and Shame.
As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave -
I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.

I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,
But I wasn't good enough - for they didn't want me.
Will you add to my baggage?
Will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things
And take me right back?

Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage,
To never re-pack?
I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see,
But I do come with baggage -
Will you still want me?

Max reminds us once again that every starfish saved is one more - and what a difference that makes. Talking about it is one thing. Actually DOING it is the important thing. Heartfelt thanks to the team who saved him, and who opened that door to his new life.

Just look at the way he stands; even in the condition he is in, he looks so dignified. He will be some beauty and I am honored to donate to his health campaign. I am so glad he is in your care and while he is beautiful now, he will be even more so when he is healed.
