OTIS GOES HOME!

20 DECEMBER 2014

On 22 December, Laurie writes:

I received a request from Marilyn Royle for information on Otis
for an adoption article in the upcoming CRUSA Newsletter,
CARIN' FOR CAIRNS today,
which brought my husband & me back to our discussion
about what's best for Otis.

When we took him on,
our first agreement was that we would keep him as long as necessary,
knowing that a special needs senior would not be an easy placement.
We decided that we were okay with keeping him forever,
if that's how it worked out.
We never expected to go through all of these treatments and the surgery.
We thought we were getting a guy who was as good as he could get
and who would only deteriorate over time. And we were okay with that.

Of course, we didn't know Otis when we made our decision
to be the best foster parents we could be for him and for Daren.
Honestly though, our rocky start did make me a little hesitant to trust him,
but he broke those walls down pretty quickly.

My husband & Otis bonded immediately and they have a great relationship.
Over the past three months, Otis & I have learned to work together,
travel together, and trust each other. I have watched Otis
freak out every time I tried to put him into the car to go anywhere.
He would cringe down and not even want to get out when we got home,
looking scared & dejected. Then I would see him act like a puppy
once he realized he was back with his "family" in "his" home.

He has become such a wonderful character to have around
He's not a huge licker, but there are times when he just melts into me
and gives me kisses and the look in his eyes says, Thanks.

While we don't want to hold him back from something better,
we have a hard time thinking it could be much better anywhere else.
He has his dog buddies, a family, his friends where I work,
our extended families, and a home where we can continue to work
with his potty habits and know about his issues with trucks,
certain noises and his inability to see quickly-moving objects.

While he could adapt to another family, I hate to put him through that.
I feel getting really comfortable here was hard on him and it only happened
as quickly as it did because he & I had to spend a lot of time
dealing with his eye care and subsequent surgery.

Let me stop rambling.
We'd like to know if before we put him out there for adoption,
can we be considered to adopt Otis?
