2 DECEMBER: THIRD WATER THERAPY & LASER

Ph

After water therapy, a little laser and Adequan shot

5 DECEMBER: FRIDAY WORKOUT

Ph

Luna had her fourth water therapy (18 min at 1.3 mph),
and another laser treatment today.

Ph

Luna's weight today is 49.4 pounds. She started at 52.6,
but has been hovering around 49.5 since that second week.
She is eating with more enthusiasm at meal times,
and is taking in about two cups of dry food,
with about two tablespoons of pumpkin or wet food mixed in.
She takes small crunchy treats by hand now,
still sometimes with a bit of apprehension.

Ph

Luna is playing more - she loves balls!
Totally enjoys being outside, so much so that in the evening or on rainy days,
I have to take her out to the yard in a leash,
or she'd stay out much longer than the others.
She is a howler when an ambulance or police car zooms by;
Connor &Britta are quite interested in her when she starts to sing.

Ph

Luna is navigating stairs with much less trouble now;
you can still see her back legs turn in awkwardly as she goes up,
and she does a bunny hop with the back ones when she goes down.
Still does the tripod stand when she is in once place for any length of time.

I am continuing to watch the lump on her hip.
It is not increasing in size or shape - YEAH!

As far as her medications:
She is still getting the three herbals twice daily,
but we are down to one Tramadol and 1/2 of the Carprofen per day
(from six Tramadol a day and one Carprofen she was put on at her first vet visit).
I also give her one fish oil and one teaspoon of Missing Link
mixed with her morning meal.

Luna is a total doll!
While she is still not sure about being snuggled,
she is now greeting Hubby Chris when he comes home,
with the other dogs and her tail wagging.
At night before I go to bed, and when she is lying on her pillow,
she'll let me stroke her from head to tail and appears to be soaking it up.

She has not been the least big destructive
(well, other than the bending of the kennel bars),
and knows what "no" means if she is getting into something.
She sleeps upstairs with free access to the house,
and we have had no issues.
She has not had any potty accidents in the house.

8 DECEMBER: THERAPY & WORKOUT

Luna BEFORE HER FIFTH THERAPY

Leaving for therapy in a few minutes.
Hope this didn't wear her out before!
She is starting to keep up with the others.

Ph

Luna getting out at the vet . . .

Ph

. . . and in the waiting room. Waiting.

As you can see in the video clip, she is moving much better
(not for long periods, but she's interacting and
starting to show she can zoom too!).
Showed the clip to the vet, who said that I should try to
keep Luna calm this afternoon because with her workout
(22 minutes at 1.4 mph for a total of .45 miles),
the laser treatment and some adjustments she got,
she wanted her to not stress her back end the rest of the day.
Luna also got another Adequan shot today.

14 DECEMBER: LUNA IS FEELING HER OATS!

In the last two days,
I've seen Luna do something she's not done since she came here.
She stood on her hind legs!
She did it against the fence along our backyard.
She has become enthralled with the squirrels jumping in the trees,
walking the electric wires, and scurrying around to dig up acorns in our yard.

15 DECEMBER: RESTING WELL

Ph

We snapped a few sweet photos of Luna tonight, resting with Britta
(can't help but wonder if they are litter mates
as they both have the same birth date from the Humane Society).

Ph

Luna able to sleep with Britta resting her head on Luna's hips
says a lot about how much better her hips are feeling.
I'd say her Christmas wish has been granted!

My daughter, Adri, came home from college last night

16 DECEMBER

Luna was a CHAMP
at therapy yesterday, again!
She is on the scale,
checking out her weight.
She is 48.6 pounds,
as you can see.
Still holding pretty steady
at the 49-pound range.

Yesterday was the first day she took and ate
(rather than spit out) some crunchy carrots.
I think the others gobbling them up had her rethink trying them.
So, at least we are making progress on taking things that are offered to her by hand.

Luna has really enjoyed the yard the last few days,
and for the last couple of weeks she has had to be encouraged
to come inside - I go out and leash her to bring her in.
She loves to go on walks, so the leash is my bait
(she comes running when she sees the leash),
but it also means that I have to take a quick walk
down the street before we go inside.
Not sure if I started a good thing!

When she is inside, she is good as gold;
doesn't pace or seem at all antsy,
so I think she just likes all the activity associated with outside
(breezes, squirrels, people walking down the street, cars whizzing by,
a bit of digging, more physical activity with the other dogs, etc.).
Many of the Henderson dogs (Britta included)
had an aversion to coming inside, and through doorways in general,
for a long period of time after rescue. So we are working with Luna
to get her to come inside when called with the other dogs.
She'll come to the doorway when the other dogs race through,
peer in, but then back off, and if you reach for her, she bolts.
All things that Britta did for the first few months here
(and sometimes still does when she gets a whiff of cleaning smells
or the unexpected noises in the house).
