RUSTY BRYANT-RISE

Then, the time was upon us. He would be entering his forever home for the first time. First stop, the backyard. It is well and truly "his" now that he's marked the entire perimeter. Twice. Now for the inside. We hoped aloud that he wasn't going to be quite so eager to indicate his "territory" indoors as well. Up the stairs. While there are 14 of them, he chose to use only two. Hey, may as well put those legs to good use!

Ph

Gee . . . we always wanted a lap-dog!

I was already busy inside getting his new travel bed and all his toys ready for him to enjoy. Inside now. SNIFFSNIFFSNIFF every little square inch of the house. Even a stop at the computer where he found his mom (that's me) who had stopped to send a quick note to let everyone know "Rusty's home". He had his chin on my lap during that message. His eyes told me it was time to eat. So off we went.

Ph

Okay, I'll try lying in my new bed.

SNIFF around the kitchen . . . no coutersurfing (today). His head rests atop the counters. Definitely going to have to watch this boy! I put food into his new bowl. We tried the "wait" trick, where he should sit nicely until told to eat. He doen't know that one yet. He WILL know that one very soon. For now, we just want to get some meat on those bones of his. Good news - no growling or snapping whatsoever when it comes to his food.

Then we were ready for all of the usual "tests". I proceeded to cook dinner for us (which was actually breakfast . . . forgot to eat today). He watched every move I made from outside the kitchen. Craig tried to distract him, but he wasn't having any of that. He didn't take his eyes off of me and what I was doing. There was food involved. He inched his way closer to the kitchen. As he got closer, I simply snapped my fingers and pointed toward the other room. He got the picture and ended up lying down on the living room floor beside Craig. Unbelievably well-mannered.

All during dinner, he just lay on the floor. Looking at us. I don't remember knowing any dog this well-behaved. We're hoping it's not just a phase!

Ph

But why lie in my bed, when I can lie on Craig?

After dinner, he decided it was time to snuggle. Not one ounce of aloof in this dog. He is a lover through and through. And when he sits, he lifts his left paw off the ground as if he's going to "shake" your hand. It's the darndest thing. What a personality. Sweet and gentle combined with giant bounding horse. Soft paws across the wood floor . . . quiet as can be. We haven't heard a bark yet (since he was in Connie's truck). In fact, earlier on the way to his pit-stop at the park we passed a man walking his dog. I automatically plugged my ears, waiting for the BARKBARKBARK! And nothing. He just watched - quietly. Huh. Weird.

Ph

Furthermore, I can even *sleep* on Craig.

How did we get so incredibly lucky? We are so so so blessed and fortunate to have this gentle giant in our lives. We already love him. In fact, I'm going to go now and tell him so. I hope that soon he will feel that way about us, and his forever home. Our lives just got a whole lot better - and a little like the Grinch, our hearts grew three times today!

Thank you, Connie Turner, for wanting the "unwanted" and for making this possible.

Maureen:

I do so like happy endings - or would this best be described as a happy "beginning"?

Lucky Rusty - he's home for good.

Thanks for the update. We can hardly wait for tomorrow's account!

Ph

Yeah? Well two can play that game!

Barb:

Just got off the phone with Connie from ADT Rescue. What an awesome lady. Of course, that was after I made dinner for both boys (Craig & Rusty), and answered calls from my mom & my brother. All wanting to hear about Rusty. Jeez! It's like we gave birth! Well, I guess we sort of did, we are reborn!

Ph

Zzzzzzzzzz . . . and to all a good night.
(I think there has been some bonding)

Well, I am going to hit the hay - looks like I'll have the entire bed to myself tonight! As I type this, these two are zonked out on the floor. Isn't that dog the cutest thing? Can't wait to see him in about six months from now . . . new hair . . . new weight . . .

Sue:

In a word - we're all crying for you - with HAPPINESS!!!!!!!!

Snuffling sniffling Sue in southern Oz

Libby Karier:

The pictures say it all, don't they?

Congrats Barb, Craig & Rusty.

I just looooove happy endings (and as Maureen said, happy beginnings, too).
