Let me go back a step or two . . .

I had promised Atia that I would visit her & Enzo in Sydney on the first opportunity I had in August. We are in contact every week, and have been anticipating our reunion with great joy. Some four weeks ago, she told me that Enzo had begun to show blood in his urine; the vet prescribed a course of antibiotics for ten days, with a review after that. A second course followed. Last Friday, with no visible improvement, an ultrasound was recommended, scheduled for Monday of this week.

Maia & her Enzo-puppies.
They are all adored; she knows them all by their names,
treasured gifts from many generous-hearted Enzo-fans.

They arrived from all over the world in September 2006,
when Maia spent time in hospital undergoing
an operation to lengthen her right leg.

She now walks & runs strongly;
her favourite exercise is kicking a soccer ball
with anyone who will kick it back
Even Auntie Sue played!

Because I was already booked to fly to Sydney early on Saturday, the timing of the ultrasound was good. It meant I could go with Atia to Sydney University Vet Clinic and meet the treating vet, helping to provide information at the same time as supporting Atia.

The local riverside parklands are lovely places
for Enzo to read the latest news from The Daily Dog.

He makes his own comments, of course.

To see Enzo again on Saturday was both emotional & wonderful. He has aged, yes, but his beautiful eyes still shine and he clearly remembered me. I cried as I put my arms around his chest, his big paws paddling and his head nudging under my arm. You have brought treats, haven't you? Well, of course, Enzo.

Ph

He does so love his rambles in the park.

Both afternoons, in the gentle almost-spring sunshine, Atia, Maia & I took him to a local riverside park, where we wandered over soft grass and sat by the paperbark trees, looking over the water and just enjoying the sensation of 'being'.

Ph

This of course is my 'other' side.
I know you all love my sticky-up ear,
but really it's just so I can hear you better.

And please excuse my odd-looking legs.
I think the vet who shaved me had better not apply
for a grooming job, d'you think?

The sweetness of once again being with this incredible, courageous, wonderful boy was not overshadowed by his diminished physicality. However, reality hovers always at our shoulders, and deep down, both Atia & I were dreading the outcome of Monday's examination.

Ph

Two beautiful smiles

The treating vet, Aitor (from Portugal) was remarkable in his immediate grasp of Enzo's history, and it warmed my heart to see the respect & gentleness with which he handled our treasured Senior Airedale.

Ph

Yup. It's that ear again.
But I think they went thattaway, right?
