GOLDIE IN THE SNOW II

29 NOVEMBER 2006

Lisa writes:

North of Boulder we were hit with about 15" of the most beautiful, fluffy snow last night and this morning. Gracie thinks this is the best and loves to stick her head all the way into the snow. It's very funny but something I bet most of you have seen yourself as I think all my Airedales have done this.

Goldie, on the other hand, isn't nearly so enthusiastic about the snow. She's pretty happy to go outside and do her business then come back in. In fact, last night, for the very first time since we've had her, Goldie did not ask to go outside. She's like clockwork and usually asks to out between 2:00 & 2:30 a.m. every night. I think she saw the snow and decided things could wait. Which they did!

As you may have noticed in other pictures, Goldie's elbows are very black & hairless & calloused. I've usually seen elbows like this on dogs that were chained outside or kenneled outside on a slab. During the last two months a significant amount of hair has started growing back on her elbows. We'll probably have that black, warty thing frozen off sometime in the future.

I bought dog boots for Goldie for the inside. Since she's become so much more mobile she's going into rooms with hardwood floors & tile and is having a difficult time getting traction. The front boots are really helping her move along and the back boots are preventing some raw spots from friction. You would be amazed to watch this girl move from room to room. If she wants to go somewhere - she's going! On Friday we're getting another set of four for the outside.

Here is Goldie at her new, favorite place in the house - right in the center of traffic - just the place any Airedale wants to camp. (Just ignore the scuff marks on the risers!)

Sally Schnellmann came up with the idea of sewing something for Goldie to prevent her from getting raw spots caused by friction when she's pulling herself around. Maybe a dog version of leather chaps!

COLLEEN KUNECKE:

I read the Goldie story last night . . . this is the first I had heard of her plight. Airedales are such cool pals! Her recovery is nothing short of miraculous (Lisa sure is an inspiration)! WOW!

KIM WEST:

What a dog and what a super group of people that helped her out. I like hearing stories that have such great endings.
