ROCKY IS HOME!

We picked Rocky up around 1:30 this afternoon. They gave him a small shot of a sedative just before we arrived so that he wouldn't become overly excited. He was still pretty excited, though. I know he had to feel relieved when he saw that we had come back for him. I hated to leave him there for those two nights. I always worry that after everything these dogs have suffered through to make it into rescue, only to be left at the vet for a few days, he had to think, Hey, what the heck . . . we were getting along so well.
Yes, Rocky, you are a good boy and we are so proud of you.
He is doing well. He walked into the exam room with the intern, took one look at the surgeon who saved his leg, and started kissing her all over her face. I felt a bit slighted. Actually it did my heart good. It was Rocky's way of saying Thank you Dr. Hoch.
Now begins the long road to recovery. Rocky must be kept quiet for the next 12-16 weeks. Any of you have met him know that will be a tough task to accomplish. He is resting now thanks to the shot, and we will keep him comfortable with the pain meds & sedatives they sent home with him. He must be on a restricted diet so that he doesn't put too much weight on during this quiet time. He must remain in his crate except for short trips outside, always on lead, only to go potty.
If all goes well, Rocky will begin to use the leg within 7-10 days. Currently he is just sort of dragging it behind him. Our instructions for the next week until he goes back to be checked is to monitor his bandage daily and check his toes twice a day. I know he's in need of a pedicure, but . . . . I will be looking for signs of swelling and checking for any abnormal discharge or smell. Yuk. Hope I don't see (or smell) any of that.
We have raised about $1500 to date. Rockyıs expenses are already over $5000 and we're not done yet. If you've been thinking about making a donation to a worthy cause, this boy is definitely worthy. In addition to thanking all of our donors, NCAR wants to personally thank the following people:
First and foremost, thanks to my wonderful husband who makes it possible for me to help Airedales in need.
Many many thanks to the administration & staff at Carolina Veterinary Specialists, especially Dr. Jennifer Hoch.
I would be remiss if I didn't thank Dr. Amy Nunemacher at Cobb Animal Clinic, our family vet who always goes above & beyond the call of duty when I bring in another rescue.
I have sooooo much mischief planned when I get outta here!
NCAR thanks all of you, but more importantly,
