ROCKY'S CHECK-UP

28 APRIL 2010

Debbie writes:

Rocky went to have his sutures removed this morning. I don't know why I was nervous, but I really was. Were they going to be disappointed that he wasn't using his leg more? Were they going to tell me that I hadn't kept it clean enough? Were they going to tell me one of the pin sites was infected? Most of my worry was for nothing, but during the drive there, I was preparing my excuses should they be needed.

Once again, Rocky aced a test that I'm sure he hadn't given a thought to. Do they wish he was using the leg more? Yes, they do, but it's only been two weeks. I'll get back to that in a minute.

He is so loved by all of the doctors. and the staff at Carolina Veterinary Specialists. I think Dr. Hoch was as excited to see Rocky as he was to see her. Rocky definitely has an eye for the women, so we will want to keep that in mind when we begin the search for his furever home.

Dr. Hoch was pleased with the way he looked. He has begun to put that foot down and his paw does hit the ground occasionally. He was a champ when he had the sutures removed and the incision is looking very very nice.

Dr. Hoch wanted to see how Rocky did on a short walk, so she took him outside and walked him around a bit. She wasn't thoroughly pleased and she gave me a very peculiar tip on a way to make him use the leg: I am to take the cap off of a soda bottle and tape it to the bottom of Rocky's good foot. In theory it is supposed to be uncomfortable enough to make him put the weight on the compromised leg. I promise to keep all of you posted as soon as I work up the nerve to try it.

Rocky has been very stoic when it comes to pain. He came to us with a broken leg that his body had tried to heal itself. Any way you look at it, the leg was broken and he suffered. All alone. With no pain meds. With no assistance. He survived. It's no surprise to me that he has been 100& a champion when it has come to his current situation. He has handled his pain & trauma as only the king of terriers would. Will the cap of a soda bottle slow him down? I don't know, but I hope so because it will be in his best interest to start putting more weight on the leg.

Rocky won't go back to see his friend Dr. Hoch for another four weeks when they will take some more x-rays and they will hope to see the first signs of healing.

In the meantime, we will continue to do what we are doing, adding a soda bottle cap several times a day to his good leg and we will keep everyone posted on his progress.

Many thanks to all of you who have donated to help with Rocky's mounting medical expenses. Much more help is needed. Please send a donation today. Rocky's expenses have exceeded $5,000.00 to date. We have a long way to go if we want to be able to raise 100% of his medical costs. We all have our paws crossed.
