SULLY BEGINS
HIS RECOVERY

5 FEBRUARY 2010

Sully in ICU before noticing his foster mom & dad

Terry writes:

Sully was scooped up by his foster mom & dad this afternoon at about 2:00 p.m. Before seeing him, they spoke with the intern about what was going to be required for his home care & safety. They were quite anxious to see Sully, but not as thrilled as he was to see them. They were escorted in to the ICU unit where he was resting on a soft bed. As soon as he saw them he cautiously stood, wagged his tail and had eyes for no one but them.

The surgeon & intern agreed that proper after-care is always very important, but especially so with "terrier breeds who seem to be more energetic & stoic than others". We're betting this will be the case with Sully. It seems he is already accustomed to walking on three legs because was up and at 'em early this morning, wanting to eat, then go potty.

He went home with a pain patch, antibiotics & anti-inflammatory medication. A lot of swelling, bruising and some fluid build-up is expected & normal. He will get cold compresses for three days, switching to hot compresses after that.

Ph

Contrary to what Sully might think or feel, he will need to be carefully monitored for the next two weeks. He must get plenty of rest, be walked on lead to do his business and kept calm & quiet. His sutures will be removed between ten and fourteen days from today. Fortunately, his foster parents have a ranch house that is mostly carpeted and has plenty of throw rugs in areas of their home that might be a bit precarious until he finds and adapts to a new center of balance.

Ph

Sully is ready to go home for his next adventure

He couldn't be in a better place and is finally on the road to a life with no pain and assured love, guidance and, eventually, his own family who'll never let him roam again.

PRISCILLA LUNDBLAD:
What a brave, precious boy Sully is . . . remarkable how he looks so good . . . even has his ears up! And how lucky he is to have such caring foster parents. All good thoughts & wishes for a speedy recovery to this special boy!

LYNN____:
So happy [that] Sully is going home. He's a typical Airedale; nothing keeps them down for very long. Thank you Terry & foster family for taking care of this guy.

ELLANA LIVERMORE:
His recovery will go better than they expect. I was thinking back to Pirata who probably came home with the same after-care instructions. He was racing around here in no time.
[Pirata (n/k/a Captain Jack), who was rescued from México City and brought to Ellana, had a front leg amputated; this can be more difficult to adjust to than a back leg amputation. So they say, but no one told him, as you can see HERE]

PAULA LACKNER:
Sully is in great hands and he knows it. It is amazing to see how happy a boy can be to see people who have shown him some kindness. A wonderful new beginning for this handsome boy, thanks to some very special ATRA volunteers.
