I had no idea how Rico would behave throughout this trip. I have to say that I could not have asked for a better-behaved dog!
This so-called incontinent dog, who pees in his Belly Band every hour or so at home, only necessitated *two* diaper changes during the entire week. When at home, he poops in the house at least once a day; he did not have *one* accident during the entire trip! Three times a day, he told me he had to be walked; he did his business then, and that was it.
As you probably already know if you're reading these pages, in August of 2003, Rico was a "throw-away dog" because of his incontinence & inpoopitence problems. He continues these problems at home, but we love him too much to punish him or pass him along to another household. So this behavior while traveling was, to me, proof that he CAN be housetrained.
Perhaps he needs to be a single dog, although he was that in his original household. Perhaps he needs to be walked on lead, rather than be let outside to use the dogs' bathroom. That is how he was done in his original household, as they did not have a fenced yard. Perhaps he needs to live in Arizona . . . well, that we will never know.
(As soon as we got home, he reverted to his old habits; perhaps we should try this . . .)
The dog-who-loves-too-much and has anxiety attacks & hysterics whenever we leave the house (even if it's only to step on the front porch to get the mail) was was Mr.-Calm-and-Cool . . . he did not bark when I left the car (NOT during the day, nor for more than two minutes at night); not when I left him in the motel for a few minutes to eat breakfast; not in the nursing home; not at the feral c*s he is watching through this window; not at the drive-up window at Burger King; not at all.
(. . . and when nothing is happening, he naps.)
