A private punting channel for the college
(King's, I think, but so much info, so little retention)

Ph

The area is called the Backs because it is the back of the colleges -
some lovely old buildings

Ph

The Bridge of Sighs . . . there are three of them: OXFORD, CAMBRIDGE & VENICE, ITALY

Ph

Notice how low some of the bridges are

Ph

ST JOHN'S COLLEGE is also known as the wedding cake college because of its design.

Ph

Trinity College's original WREN LIBRARY,
designed by Christopher Wren. Isaac Newton's letters are kept here.

Ph

Trinity (I think) It took 98 years to build the church.
After WWI, returning soldiers looking for an adrenaline rush
would climb the spires and hang things from them;
up till the 1990's, some students did this after
the May Ball so there are now downward spikes to stop them.

MATHEMATICAL BRIDGE
A popular fable is that the bridge was designed & built by Sir Isaac Newton without the use of nuts or bolts.
Various stories relate how at some point in the past either students or fellows of the University attempted
to take the bridge apart and put it back together, but were unable to work out how to hold the structure together,
and were obliged to resort to adding nuts and bolts.

In reality, bolts or the equivalent are an inherent part of the design.
When it was first built, iron spikes were driven into the joints from the outer side, where they could not be seen
from the inside of the parapets, explaining why bolts were thought to be an addition to the original.

Newton cannot have been directly involved since he died in 1727, 22 years before the bridge was constructed.
