Come 1:00 p.m., I felt the need
for caffeine at least and
preferably something sweet
& indulgent to go with it.
I'd planned to take Kaye to
Auntie's Tea Shop
where it had old-fashioned
values and service
(like the Crawford's
Tea Room of pre- and
postwar England,
designed by Scottish painter &
designer Robert Burns in 1926,
located on Princes Street, Edinburgh).

The waitress in a black dress & starched white apron showed us to our seat.
Kaye decided on a sandwich and I thought a sandwich would be better than a cake.

Knowing how little Kaye eats and
had I seen the sandwiches before I ordered,
I might have suggested we share one.
Just after the waitress disappeared with our order,
another arrived with the order for the table next to ours -
a sandwich so big it could have fed the nation.
Well, not quite, but certainly the biggest UK sandwich I have ever seen.

Ph

Ours arrived and were of equal size;
Kaye thought she might ask for a doggy bag,
but the food was so nice we ate the whole lot.

Ph

After lunch, we wandered about the shops,
where I saw a lovely abstract picture of a dog;
it was almost Airedale in design,
but there was something very nice about it.

I looked closer and to my surprise
the price was not very nice:
147 GBP (229 USD; 233 CAD;
241 AUD; 290 NZD),
so I took a picture of it
to keep on my computer.

By now we'd walked about Cambridge for five hours;
Kaye was getting weary. 'Death by tourism', I said to her.
She spends a day or so being shown places of local interest
at every stop and moves on. We rest & recover,
but she is still walking round England on the next leg of her tour.

Ph

We made a detour via Ely
so she could see the Cathedral,
a/k/a THE SHIP OF THE FENS,
but it was closed to the public for
open university degree presentations.

KAYE SAYS, 'SORRY, NO DOGGY BAG'.
 But she did buy them a box of Bonio Biscuits.

Back home, we relaxed and played with The Wild Bunch,
who were on their best behaviour for their visitor;

Ph

so much so that Kaye is still looking for The Wild Bunch.

Ph

She fell in love with Elle, threatening to sneak her into her suitcase.
Elle did take a look and considered it for a moment,
but declined the offer, as she was sure there was
a pea in the bottom of the case and she would be uncomfortable.

Ph

We went to our local Chinese restaurant
for dinner and a couple of beers.

All too soon it was Sunday morning
and Kaye had to resume her travels.

I got her to the rail station
in plenty of time to get her ticket,
find her platform and have a coffee.
I get panicky about
people missing trains,
so I did say to Kaye
I wasn't trying to get rid of her.

She has promised to
come back to see us again
and I hope she does.
I'll take her to
the coast next time.

LYDIA ROSS:
Wow! Thanks for sharing the trip with us. My uncle used to teach at Cambridge;
haven't been there in over 25 years! The punt looks like a fun excursion.
I'm going to try your tablet recipe; it's a bit different from my aunt's. I LOVE tablet!
The best part is having it with hot tea; it melts the tablet in your mouth to a smooth sugary heaven.
I can see next time I come to the UK, I'll have to make a stop at Jackie's, no worries Jackie -
I eat like a horse!

MAUREEN SCOTT:
What fun! I feel like I have joined Jackie & Kaye on their sightseeing tour!

Now to think of something equally stunning for entertainment when Kaye drops by here in Canada
next week! You're a hard act to follow, Jackie! The Circus is anticipating Auntie Kaye's visit
and we are very excited about it as well . . . .

Andréa & Jackie, thank you for sharing this visit. It was fun to follow along in the punt,
dine at the tea shop and see photos of the Wild Bunch with Kaye.

MARE MOORE:
It was such fun to finally put a face on Kaye, as well as traveling along
whilst she & Jackie ate, drank & toured their way around, taking in some of England's
grand historical sites. Cambridge looks like it'd be a wonderful city to explore.

BOB ANDERSON:
What a delightful outing! Jackie is the BEST of tour guides.

On 12 June, KAYE ROBERTS writes:
OMG. I've just gotten back to Lizzie Hurtt's place here in London
(spent last night & today with a friend in London Central) and saw the website
you created for my visit to Jackie & Tom's. Some shocking bad-hair-day photos!
I didn't take NZ toiletries with me and obviously UK brands are slightly different to the same brand at home.

But despite Jackie saying I didn't eat much I honestly had more than enough, believe me.
Jackie's version of fajitas were on the large size and I'm honestly not a big eater at the best of times.

PLUS that sandwich in the tea shop really was HUGE. Given like most ADT owners I'm one to share
with Torts any food from my plate . . . I remember saying to Jackie they "talk" about the USA
having plus-sized servings.

I looked aimlessly around for Sir or one of The Wild Bunch to palm some of the excess food on to.
Then later that night, we headed out for Chinese dinner and obviously struggled to eat much . . .
given as a rule I don't eat lunch.

I thoroughly enjoyed my short time with Jackie, Tom & the . . . err . . . Not-So-Wild Bunch and, yes,
I would've packed Ellie in a millisecond. She's such a wee sweetie. Mahri was busy supervising me
repacking my suitcase; Tom couldn't work out why till I explained there was a box of Bonios in it
for my visit with Jean & Kerry Maple. "Och," he says, "that explains it."

Jokes aside - if you do ever decide to cross the Pond, Jackie & Tom's is a great place to stay and be pampered.

Thanks heaps . . . off to meet up with Maureen & The Circus today week; can't work out where the times gone!

Anim

DEB WIERSUM:
Cambridge looks really charming. I may have to go there next time.
I have the same daffodil Jackie was wearing. They were sold outside
the local Sainsbury's for charity.

DOREEN MUNDIE:
Sent this recipe off to my cousin in Scotland to see if his mom ever made it.

Anim

JACKIE McGUINNESS replies:
You're on, Lydia.

I will make you a full Scottish breakfast: Porridge with salt, of course, then fried egg, bacon,
square sausage, black pudding, dumpling, potato scone & baked beans.

That will keep you going till lunch time, when, depending on the time of year it may be a
Scottish cheddar sandwich or homemade soup.

G&T (gin & tonic) and some crudités or even Pringles to set you up for dinner.

The evening meal could be from anywhere in the British Isles, depending on the season . . .
fresh asparagus and jersey royal potatoes at the moment or it might be an Indian or a Chinese dish.

Homemade rhubarb crumble, anyone? Chocolates & brandy?

Anim

TERRY STEVENS:
LOVE IT! Wish we could make it to breakfast too, Jackie!

On 13 June, KAYE adds:
I totally recommend Chez McGuinness to anyone wanting to come over to the UK;
apparently The Wild Bunch has resumed "normal" behaviour
since my departure.

Hard to believe, but all my ADT friends - the four-pawed version anyway -
have been on their very best behaviour including Kerry Maple.

Last visit I lost my cod from Cod 'n' Chips dinner to Kerry. OK, my fault;
again, not eating much and AGAIN a HUGE meal. I was just saying to Jean,
"OMG, I am stuffed full," when Kerry took the opportunity to grab
the remaining piece of cod and, well, do what ADTs do. Jean was totally mortified;
me totally STUNNED . . . as Torts isn't food-motivated and I didn't think about Kerry thieving off my plate!

Fast forward to this visit and Kerry was a perfect angel; waited patiently till I'd had enough,
then waited gracefully till I put the dinner in her bowl. OK. she wasn't best pleased
when she got served Pete's dinner as he hadn't had Cod 'n' Chips. Sort of looked at it saying,
OI! Where's me cod then?? She did eat it, albeit under sufferance.

Looking forward to the next ADT adventure with the members of The Circus;
will they be on their best behaviour, too???
