PHASE THREE:
THE ROLLING BEGINS

8 JUNE 2012

15 MILES

Lisa writes:

Debbie, Cathy & Lee left North Carolina on Wednesday night.
Including the 300 miles Cathy drove to meet up with Debbie & Lee,
the team has driven 1700 miles to get to the Colorado/Kansas border.

On their drive west they went through the following states to get to the Colorado border:

Virginia
Tennessee
Kentucky
Illinois
Missouri
Kansas

On their way into Kansas City, they passed by the Chief's Arrowhead Stadium.

In Kansas, they stopped at the former home of Debbie's grandparents.
This historical home, known as the Moses Grinter House,
was owned by her grandparents during her childhood.
Her grandpa turned it into a museum, which can be seen HERE

They paid their respects at Fort Riley.

On a much less serious note, they passed by the (sign of)
The World's Largest Groundhog in Oakley, Kansas.

Ph

And on a "green" note, they passed by a huge wind farm.

Everyone talks about Kansas being so flat, and so much of it is.

Ph

But there are also some lovely, rolling hills in Kansas.

Today, Friday, they arrived in Shannon Springs, Kansas.
To make up for not starting at the actual Colorado border,
the biking trio road 15 miles today in blistering heat & strong winds.
Remember, this was after a 1700 mile road trip!

Tonight they're in a tent city and are just one of more than 100 tents.
In addition, the local gymnasium is packed with cots & sleeping bags.

Here are Debbie & Lee's accommodations for the next week:

Over 100 people are supporting the 800 riders, plus countless other volunteers
who served spaghetti, sandwiches & other food for the riders to fuel up.

Debbie & the gang are very excited to get started, and they won't have to wait long.
The ride begins at 7:00 tomorrow!

All the donations are very much appreciated;
it is important to know it's not too late to pledge or donate!
