65 MILES

GOOD MORNING, KANSAS!

Deb writes:

Today was really more of the same.
Winds, but not quite as bad. To make it seem as bad as the day before,
though, they threw in some hills. OK, not some hundreds of them.
In fact I think there were 65 miles of rolling hills.
Every time I thought we wouldn't have any more hills,
I'd look up and there was one more.

We are 176 miles into a 475-mile trip.
We still have miles to go before we can really sleep.
Even in our tents at night, we are riding in our dreams.
Fighting the wind and climbing the hills.
All for an extra dollar for Airedale Rescue.
We have been so encouraged by the donations that have come
in the last couple of days. Please keep them coming.

So no MAJOR accidents yet. We did take a spill today.
Actually, I took a spill. It's never fun to lose control of your bike,
but that's what happened to me today.
I had to take a really wide right turn to avoid sandy gravel,
which is treacherous to a cyclist. I'm not even sure exactly what happened,
but Cathy and I got a little too close to one another.
She didn't know exactly where I was and I had to leave the pavement.
Another potentially dangerous situation.
What made it worse was that it was on a rocky hill. I tried -
unsuccessfully - to control my bike. Consequently,
I have lots of bruises on my hind end and hip.
It will be really sore tomorrow. At the end of the day,
it is a minor injury and I'll still be able to ride.

We have heard that we are going to have 30-mph head winds again tomorrow.
On top of that, part of the route is being repaved; they are down to one lane.
So just try to imagine 30-mph winds, temps in the 90's and hot asphalt.
All this with one lane of traffic and you are waiting
on the pilot car to lead you up the hill. Isn't it lovely.
