MAY 13
Spring is in the air and my daily training rides have become a delight! We haven't had any rain in 18 days and although the farmers are screaming, it sure makes riding pleasant.

More now than ever, I am seeing the importance of this ride for the Airedales. My local Rescue group, Airedale Rescue of Western NY, is almost out of money, but the dogs keep arriving. Nationally, there are more dogs with more needs and more expenses.

On Sunday, Tim & I are joining some "real" cyclists for what they call a slow & easy ride. The truth of that is yet to be determined. | |
MAY 14
Well, the slow and easy ride is over. It made me feel good that I was not the oldest nor the slowest person riding in the group. I rode in the top third of the pack for the entire 26 miles. Tim got wedged in for the first 13 miles and had a less enjoyable time.
It was likely pure Airedale determination that got me toward the front and definitely Airedale spunk that contributed to keeping me there.
Everyone was really nice and full of helpful hints. I talked to several people who have ridden the canal trip in years past. They all assured me that it will be either hot or raining unless you get a day where it is both!
Note from my coach, Tim the Terrible: He figures that I rode 26 miles in slightly over two hours. That gave me an average speed around 12 miles an hour. I thought this was fantastic until he added, "Robert Cheruiyot RAN and WON the Boston Marathon in less time than you rode the same 26 miles via bike." Cheruiyot ran those 26 miles in two hours and seven minutes; I guess I have more goals to reach in the next month!
