NOW PLAYING:
SAD SAD LEROY CAIRN
(Instrumental version)

And it's sad, sad Leroy Cairn
The saddest dog in the whole damned town
Sadder than old King Kong
And NOTHING like a junkyard dog

On 11 May, Shell Lewis writes:

DOG: Leroy (intact male)
approx. 10 years old.
FROM: Carson Shelter in LA
FOSTER: A friend of mine in LA;
she'll foster until
I can fly him here.
VETTING: Missing an ear.
This is an awful shelter;
not sure what they do;
waiting for vet records.

The Carson Shelter is one of the shelters in the Los Angeles County system
and is in a very rough area of LA (near Compton).
Large, noisy, smelly and very high euthanasia rate.
Tons o' pit bulls, but a fair amount of terriers show up there, too.
"Saving Carson Shelter Dogs" is a FaceBook page
that continually posts pics of dogs on the chopping block.

The challenge is that just because a dog shows up on the FB page,
it does not mean that dog is available for adoption or even for rescue.
In the case of Leroy . . . he came in sometime in mid-April
and had been confiscated from owner,
but because there were ongoing legal proceedings,
he was not available. He had been severely neglected . . . one ear is missing . . .
awful skin issues (might have mange; not sure yet).

Ph

I have a person "on the ground" there who went to Carson yesterday
to get Leroy for me; he was initially told that Leroy was slated
for euthanasia on Monday, but that he could not adopt him.
My person had driven two hours to get to Carson,
refused to leave without the dog and convinced one of the workers
to let him adopt him. And they did.

Ph

When my person arrived at Leroy's crate,
Leroy was practically comatose.
So depressed that he didn't even lift his head; just opened his eyes.
Non-stop barking at the shelter . . .
row after row of pit bulls and constant commotion.
No wonder the dogs are depressed.

Leroy is now with CRUSA;
I'm working on a way
to move him to the Chicago area.
Several options out there,
but it will take some work
to figure out details.

He's definitely a mix.

Seems younger than 10 years.

Slept for hours
after getting to his foster home,
but when he's awake,
he's active, happy
and interested in other dogs.

He'll be a great addition
to a family!
