STOP ATTACKING ME, ANTIBODIES!

Sasha's expenses have been really high ($2300 so far),
and she isn't cured yet.

Sasha has been seeing Dr. Ian Spiegel,
a vet dermatologist at VSEC,
a vet specialty hospital in Levittown, Pennsylvania.
She began seeing him in October 2012
and has been going to him once a month.
She is a very good patient,
but also presents a very challenging case
because hers is not a typical allergy
that goes away with a corn-free, fish- and-potatoes
type of diet or with medicated baths.

She appears to have Pemphigus Foliaceus (PF),
an auto-immune skin disease in which the body's own
antibodies attack protein necessary to hold skin cells together
(the mortar between the bricks).

PF is characterized by
crusting lesions on the face
(nose, ears & around eye) & body,
which is what you see on Sasha.
With this disease,
the postules form, rupture,
crust & then
scaling occurs.
Therapy consists of a
corticosteroid
(in Sasha's case,
Triamcinolone) & an
immune system
suppressant
(in Sasha's case, Atopica).

The cone of shame she was wearing in October
came off in January and she has not needed it since.
The challenge now is finding the right combination &
dosage of drugs that she can be on to keep lesions from forming,
but will not damage her liver or cause her to get Cushings disease.
Cost is also a factor, as the Atopica is pricey.

She is currently on 50 mg of Atopica and 1 mg of Triamcinolone per day,
plus 50 mg of Fluconazole (an anti-yeast medication) every other day.
Every time we try to lower the Atopica or the Triamcinolone,
the crusty lesions reappear and we have to stabilize her again.
She also gets medicated baths every three or four days.
She was given a Chlorhexidine Mousse to put on her lesions
on days when it was too cold to bathe,
but the mousse has no effect.

Pretty in Pink

Sasha is a very nice dog,
with a very lively & spunky personality and she loves to play ball.
She goes on her walks and if she sees a ball on the sidewalk,
she gets it and carries it in her mouth the entire way home.
So cute.
