BACK TO THE VET

Saylor

5 AM

Saylor woke up this morning, sick and running a fever. I got up with him and was going to let him outside to go potty, but first I had to potty quick, and he couldn't wait and went on the floor. That's okay, I told him, I know how it is when you have to go so bad. It was not good. He had some diarrhea, so I swooped him up and took him outside. He came back in and wanted to go straight back to bed. I put him back into my bed and he burrowed himself in the covers again and tried to go back to sleep.

I tried to give him his meds, but he refused to take them, even in the little pill poppers he loves so much. I tried to take his temperature, but it is impossible with his tail hurting so much; then I thought maybe he is just warm because he has been under the covers all night, so I let him be for a couple of hours. He fell back to sleep and so did I.

7:30 AM

Saylor wakes me up again doing circles on the bed. That is his way of letting me know that he has to go potty again. I get up and take him outside where he has diarrhea again. He still feels warm to the touch, but again I think it is because he has been sleeping beside me under the covers. Not good for me because he is a little hot box every night that he has been sleeping with me.

I try to give him some water and his meds again to no avail. He won't even open his mouth. He just wants to go back to bed and sleep. So I put him back on my bed and he falls asleep.

So I get ready to go to church, it is 8:45 and church starts at 9, gotta hurry, singing in the choir, and he is on my bed sound asleep. Charlie is home to keep an eye on him.

10:15 AM

Got home from church; Charlie has let him outside again to go potty. Saylor comes right inside and I could tell then after picking him up that he is hot, and it's not from being under covers. I get Charlie to hold him down with a muzzle so I can take his temp. Poor thing cried and I know it hurt, but I had to get his temp. I was 104.8. Call the vet clinic to let them know I was on my way back over with him. This is the 6th trip since last Saturday that I have been to the clinic.

10:45 AM

At the vet, a nurse evaluates Saylor; he has to be seen immediately. Dr. Brian comes in the room, and you guessed it, he has to take Saylor's temperature again. It is still 104.8.

After careful evaluation, Dr. Brian thinks he may have a respiratory infection and, hopefully, not a respiratory disease. He took him straight back to the hospital and to give him a shot for the fever and put him on IV fluids.

Poor Saylor . . . I feel so bad for him. He seemed to be doing better since Friday, when I had to go get pain meds for him. He was playing yesterday, and eating & drinking, but how quickly they can go downhill.

7:30 PM

I called the vet clinic to check on Saylor; he is still running a fever and that the doctor was just giving him another shot for it. He was resting comfortably, though, and said they would call me if there was any change tonight.

. . . AND WHAT WAS BJ
DOING THRU ALL THIS? . . .

She writes:

Saylor's such a wonderful little man. Peggy called me and I told her I was going to be working with bringing in over 100 dogs from a breeder/hoarder from another county here in Kentucky. There was one little one that had to be sent to The Bridge, but with tears in our eyes, we went on. There were too many, I asked Peggy once she knew how Saylor was doing, to call me I would answer no matter how busy I was. BTW, It says something when Peggy lets a baby sleep with her; she doesn't let them do this too often.

It was 1:30 am when I got home, my feet were killing me. But I digress, I called this morning and talked w/Peggy about our little man; he's resting comfortably, but still taking fluids. Please pray & send good thoughts to our little man; he's really adorable. I thank God for Peggy; she's a blessing to our babies and to CRUSA.

SHANNON RADESOVICH:
Just a note to BJ & Peggy to say THANKS for all you are doing for Saylor. Poor little guy needs people like you to bring him through this rough spot in his life . . . then smooth sailing the rest of the way into his forever home!

Anim

BOB ANDERSON:
Poor li'l guy! Much CairnZen, thoughts & prayers . . .

Anim

SUE COULSON:
I feel so badly for poor Saylor. Are they talking about repairing/amputating his tail SOON so he won't be in so much pain? I am assuming that his fever is not from an infection in the tail area.

Anim

MARSHA AARONS:
This is so sad. I'm sure the vet checked him to make sure he doesn't have sepsis, but he looks so pitiful & sick. Healing thoughts being sent his way.

Peggy replies:

They are checking him for everything.
His tail has already been amputated and doing great,
just still sensitive to touch.

Anim

MAUREEN SCOTT:
Poor Saylor . . . . Tail injuries are THE WORST . . . .

Anim

PAM SIMPSON:
Oh no! Poor little thing!

Anim

BENNIE JONES:
This little guy shows the true spirit of the Cairn;
you can see it in his face.
