SMOOCHIE'S STORY
Smoochie and her then 14-year-old
Cairn brother Shotzi arrived in CRUSA on
26 March 2012, after their human mom died.
Both Cairns had wonderful temperaments
and were very attached to each other.
As is often the case, the owner's adult children
had promised their mother they would take care
of her dogs. but to them, taking care of the dogs
meant rehoming them, not keeping them
(details!).
Both Cairns arrived in good spirits,
but penniless, since their human momma
never thought of including them in her will.

Shotzi iarrived intact; when we took
him to the vet for his initial exam,
our vet felt a mass the size of a tennis ball.
X-rays suggested that it was a prostate
tumor that could be removed during
Shotzi's neuter. Lo and behold,
it was a kidney tumor that had
swallowed one of Shotzi's kidneys.
It was removed, but Shotzi remained
in CRUSA until his death almost
a year later, as the tumor was malignant
and very few people are willing to
adopt a dog they know is likely
to die within a year. Shotzi had a
very happy life in CRUSA and
always sought the company
and comfort of his sister Smoochie.

Shortly after Shotzi died, Smoochie was going to be adopted,
and that is when in the course of getting her vaccines updated,
she was diagnosed with the OM. Now that she is 100% blind,
her ideal home is one that is experienced with blind dogs and
can offer her an environment where she will be safe and
able to learn to navigate the new terrain. A retired,
stay-at-home or work-from-home parent is preferred.

FOOD?!

DO I SMELL FOOD?!

In her foster home,
Smoochie has a set routine;
she knows where everything is,
where she is fed, where she sleeps,
where the doggie door that leads
to the fenced backyard is,
where the ramps that lead
to the grassy area are,
what time she gets her meals,
what time she gets her eyedrops,
what treats she gets after getting
the eyedrops, etc.
She navigates the house as if
she can see. She greets you in
the morning and wags her tail
when she hears you or feels
that you are there.

IF I GO TO SLEEP, ARE YOU GONNA STICK THAT FLASHIE THINGIE IN MY FACE?
Go ahead . . . I can sleep through it all.
