SUNNI GOES TO THE VET

6 APRIL 2016

Katie writes:

Well, I took my Sunni girl into the vet on Monday for a checkup . . .
and just got the call with her lab results, none of which are good.
Basically 70-75% of her kidneys are no longer functioning.
BUN was 26 in January and is now 92. Creatinine was 1.8 in Jan and now 3.1.
SDMA test for overall renal function is 39 (normal is 14).
Her protein loss is 0.3 and below 0.05 is normal.
There isn't really much I can do now for her except
try to get her to eat and keep her comfortable.

Sunni was diagnosed with Protein-losing neuropathy
a year ago after doing routine bloodwork and then follow up urine tests.
Never really showed any symptoms, other then decrease in appetite.
That said, on Saturday morning, Sunday morning and
Monday morning she threw up some bile.
I was immediately worried it was a sign of decreasing kidney function.
I already had the vet appointment set up for Monday,
or else I probably would've called to get her in soon.

That said, at this point there's no sense in doing any more tests
because the functions are only going to continue to decrease;
there is no reversing it. So as long as she is comfortable,
that's all that matters.

26 APRIL:

Sunni is doing pretty good all things considered.
Been eating the food I have for her pretty regularly.

11 MAY:

I just have to share this.
It's been a month now and I switched Sunni to a
raw/freeze-dried diet and she has had no ill effects
and has gained about a pound!
She's also been much more perky, too!

Ph

Here she is giving me her why did you stop petting me? look.

28 SEPTEMBER:

I'm on my way home from the ophthalmologist with the dogs.
Sunni has bleeding in her left cornea.

Have a call to the regular vet to talk underlying cause.
Kidney failure can cause blood pressure issues,
but they checked her blood pressure
and said it wasn't high enough to treat.

Send Sunni some Zen if you could.

SUNNI 3 LEGS CROSSES
THE RAINBOW BRIDGE

25 JANUARY 2017

Katie will write an In Memoriam for her precious Sunni

I have sometimes thought of the final cause of dogs having such short lives,
and I am quite satisfied it is in compassion to the human race;
for if we suffer so much in losing a dog after an acquaintance of ten or twelve years,
what would it be if they were to live double that time?

- Sir Walter Scott

Katie will soon be fostering OLLIE FROM INDY,
who is undergoing heartworm treatment
and will have to eventually have an eye removed.
His story can be read HERE

Gr

ANDREA DENNINGER:
I'm so sorry about Sunni; what a wonderful life she had with you; better than any other person could've given her. That memory will, eventually, give you solace. I will light a candle for her today . . .

RAINBOW BRIDGE

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here,
that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all
of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine
and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor;
those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing:
they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind.

They all run and play together,
but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.
His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver.
Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass,
faster and faster. You have been spotted,
and when you and your special friend finally meet,
you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face;
your hands again caress the beloved head,
and you look once more into those trusting eyes,
so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together . . .
