In the July issue of CARIN' FOR CAIRNS, Lisa writes:
HENRY'S HAPPILY EVER AFTER
2020 was an especially rough year in Texas.
The Covid Pandemic raged. Tropical storm Beta dumped
more than 16 inches of rain, causing serious flooding.
Hurricane Laura made landfall with 150 mile per hour winds,
along with almost 30 other named storms.
Amidst all of this chaos, an as-yet-unnamed eight-pound
terrier mix (first named Randy, now known as Henry) was fighting to survive.

The first stop on his road
to his furever home was with
Johnna Werner at
Lift Me Up Rescue in Texas.
Johnna remembers him coming in
dirty, scared, underweight and
heartworm positive. She started
by getting his health care needs
attended to, followed by a grooming.
His before and after pictures don't
even look like the same dog.

Next up, CRUSA angel Shell Lewis arranged for his transport up north.
A network of kind souls transported him all the way from Texas to Illinois,
where we were lucky enough to be foster fails for Henry,
along with our CRUSA alum, 12-year-old Cairn Archie.

Priority for Henry was a stop at
the vet for his heartworm treatment.
Not only are the shots themselves painful,
but it's essential that dogs
stay calm for the following weeks.
This was easy at first,
as Henry was a little nervous
with all of the newness.
As he acclimated to his new home,
he wanted to go investigate.
Balancing keeping him calm
and allowing his feisty terrier side
to flourish was challenging.

There are things we take for granted for our canine companions -
food, toys, snacks, warm beds, more food, walks, etc.
Henry hadn't really had experience with these on any regular basis.
It didn't take him long, however, to find his place,
both in our home and in our hearts. He has discovered toys,
with monkey being a particular favorite. He shows him no mercy.
Monkey happens to be Archie's favorite,
but he's gracious enough to share with the little guy.
Food is also a favorite of Henry's.
He's quite demanding in the morning and at supper,
doing a cute little dance to make you move faster and get him his grub.
Although he gulps his meals down, he does hoard snacks.
We've found plenty of treats hidden under our pillow or
in out-of-the way nooks.
Surprisingly, he's great on a leash.
He trots along and sniffs and pees and sniffs and pees and sniffs.
He's met a few friends, both human and canine.
He started school on June 28th, attending Archie's same class.
I'm sure they're trading notes.
In just a few short weeks,
his loving feisty terrier personality is shining bright,
and he's really thriving in a loving home.
We can't wait to be with him for the rest of his journey.
