ZOEY HAS HER SURGERY

29 APRIL 2013

Violetta writes:

Thanks to everyone who donated,
Zoey had her surgery on Monday, 29 April and all is well.

I was able to get her in at Plumsted Animal Hospital,
in Cream Ridge, New Jersey
(very close to the Jackson, New Jersey outlets
for those of you familiar with NJ).
This clinic is somewhat out of the way for me,
but it is owned by Dr. Michael Petranto,
who until last year was the Medical Director at the vet clinic that we
(CRUSA & I) have been using since 2004 and the vet who
has operated on my own Cairns & foster dogs since 2004.
He loves doing surgery, so much that he spends one or two weeks
of his vacation time each year at an Advanced Surgery Camp
for vets where all they do is surgeries, and he is excellent at it.

The good news is that Zoey's mammary tumor was not a tumor after all.
It was a hernia and her uterus had gone into the hernia.
She also was not spayed, contrary to what the surrendering owner
had been told by her son, who was Zoey's original owner.
So Dr. Petranto first had to push her uterus back into her body cavity,
repair the hernia and then make another incision to spay her.

When we picked her up last night,
she was still very groggy from the anesthesia & morphine
and would not eat for us. Today she is still a little groggy,
but has been eating, drinking & going potty just fine.

The weirdest thing is that she must have come into heat at some point,
including during the eight months that she spent with her adoptive family,
yet no one noticed. She first came to CRUSA on 12 May 2012,
was in foster care until August 2012, got adopted in August
and was returned in March 2013.

So all is well with Zoey,
who thanks everyone who cared & contributed to her surgery.
Dr. Petranto gave us a large discount, so we came in below budget,
at $800, which includes the $270 we had spent
on x-rays & blood work to diagnose her.

She gets her stitches out in ten days and now has a bright future ahead of her.
Any monies raised but not used for Zoey
will be used for her fellow CRUSA foster Sasha.
More to come on Sasha in the next couple of days; stay tuned.
